Another pardoned white-collar convict donated to Bush

Man who concealed ties to organized crime the second out of the 'Bush 19' confirmed to have given money to support Bush.

Another set of donations to the Republican Party made by a white-collar convict pardoned by President Bush has been revealed.

Alan Maiss, former president of Bally Gaming, made two contributions totaling $1,500 to President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. That same year, he also donated $1,000 to former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt's presidential campaign on the Democratic ticket.

Bush pardons 19, commutes 1 prison term

WASHINGTON (AP) — Before leaving for the holidays, President Bush on Tuesday commuted the prison sentence of a drug offender and granted 19 pardons, including one to a man who helped the Jewish resistance in the 1940s.
With this latest batch, which includes forgiveness for convictions ranging from gun and drug violations to bank and mail fraud, Bush has granted a total of 191 pardons and nine commutations. That's fewer than half as many as Presidents Clinton or Reagan issued during their two terms.
Included in the latest list is Charles Winters, who is considered a hero in Israel.
In addition to Winters, others granted pardons were:
— William Alvis III, of Flushing, Ohio.
— John Allen Aregood of Riviera, Texas.
— Eric Charles Blanke of Parker, Colo.
— Steve Doyle Cavender of The Villages, Fla.
— Marie Elena Eppens of Lynden, Wash.
— Lydia Lee Ferguson of Sun City, Ariz.
— Eduviges Duvi Gonzalez-Matsumura of Clovis, Calif.
— George Clarence Greene Jr. of Gray, Ga.
— James Won Hee Kang of South Barrington, Ill.
— Alan Stephen Maiss of Reno
— Richard Harold Miller of Tallahassee, Fla.
— Delano Abraham Nixon of Neosho Rapids, Kan.
— John H. Overholt of Black Hawk, S.D.
— Morris Keith Parker of Georgetown, S.C.
— Robert Truman Reece of Redondo Beach, Calif.
— Donald Edward Roessler of Harrison, Ohio.
— Issac Robert Toussie of Brooklyn, N.Y.
— David Lane Woolsey of St. George, Utah.
Bush also commuted the prison sentence of Reed Raymond Prior of Des Moines.

Activism: Co-Sponsor H. Res. 1531 Against The Bush Blanket Pardons

Because of the tens of thousands of our action page submissions in the last couple weeks, the mainstream media is actually talking about the prospect of blanket pardons, including the despicable act of Bush planning to pardon himself.
The White House has even been forced to issue a non-denial denial, saying that Bush is "disinclined" to issue such pardons.

ACTION PAGE:

Tell Your Member Of Congress To Oppose The Pardons Before Bush Absolves Himself

5,587 Submissions so far

And because of your voices we are actually seeing movement in Congress as well. Representative Nadler has put forward H. Res. 1531, which has some really terrific text in it about the intent of the founders and how this all relates to impeachment, so there is a definite suggestion there that a self pardon in particular would be compelling grounds for impeachment. Please submit this action page as well to ask your House member to co-sponsor this.
In an article in the New York Times the other day, current attorney general Mukasey is quoted as asserting it would not be "necessary" to grant blanket pardons. But please take careful note he did not say it wouldn't happen, because unless we speak out now it WILL.

Please click on the link below to send a message to your government representatives. You can also have your personal comments sent as a message to the editor of your local daily newspaper.

Pardons: Will he or won't he?

From the ACLU...

There’s a real risk that President Bush may issue pardons to a number of high-ranking Administration officials for any activities related to torture, extraordinary rendition and other abuses.
That’s right. Even before they’re charged with a crime, Bush has the power to prevent any criminal investigation into the activities of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Gonzales and others whose behavior raises serious questions.
Send a message to President Bush telling him you oppose preemptive pardons for torture.
We must make it clear that preemptive pardons aimed at letting high-ranking officials escape accountability for undermining the Constitution and violating the law go against American values of justice and due process.
Today, the ACLU is urging concerned people all across the country to speak out against these pardons. Americans -- and the world -- have a right to know the truth about torture and other abuses carried out in our name.
Tell President Bush: you oppose preemptive pardons for torture.
This weekend, both The New York Times and The Washington Post issued powerful editorials calling on President Bush to resist taking this inflammatory action. We need you to do the same.
As the Post put it, "no country should be in the business of concealing its history." We should be getting at the truth, not excusing those involved in shameless acts.
So, in a preemptive campaign of our own, the ACLU is urging people all across the country to tell President Bush that you won’t stand for preemptive pardons for people who were involved in torture, illegal detention, and other abuses.
Take action: Tell President Bush you oppose preemptive pardons for torture.
In its editorial, The New York Times made the case clearly:

"The Bush administration distorted statutes and case law to legally justify interrogation techniques that had long been considered torture under domestic and international law. It relied on sloppy or aggressive legal analysis as a basis for evading judicial review of a warrantless wiretapping program. It has at every turn chosen the most expansive interpretation of the law to rationalize indefinite detentions and deny federal court review to those in custody. It has, in short, determined its preferred course of action first and then stitched together absurd readings of the law to defend those choices."

The last thing America needs as we set out to restore the rule of law and repair America’s reputation in the world is a last-ditch Bush effort to pardon those who guided our country so far off course.
Please act now. Help the ACLU raise a powerful wave of protest expressing outrage that pardons by President Bush are even under consideration.
Sincerely,
Anthony D. Romero

George W Bush could pardon spies involved in torture

George W Bush is considering issuing pardons for US spies embroiled in allegations of torture just before he leaves the White House.
Senior intelligence officers are lobbying the outgoing president to look after the men and women who could face charges for following his orders in the war on terrorism.
Many fear that Barack Obama, who has pledged to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and put an end to the policy of extraordinary rendition, could launch a legal witch hunt against those who oversaw the policies after he is sworn in on Jan 20.
Most vulnerable are US intelligence officers who took part in intensive interrogations against terrorist suspects, using techniques including water boarding, which many believe crossed the line into torture.
A former CIA officer familiar with the backstage lobbying for pardons, said: "These are the people President Bush asked to fight the war on terror for him. He gave them the green light to fight tough. The view of many in the intelligence community is that he should not leave them vulnerable to legal censure when he leaves."
An effort is under way to get pre-emptive pardons. The White House has indicated that the matter is under consideration."
In addition to frontline CIA and military officers, others at risk could include David Addington, Dick Cheney's former counsel, and William Haynes, the former Pentagon general counsel who helped draw up the regulations governing enhanced interrogations.
Many in the Democratic party and human rights groups are calling on President-Elect Obama to tear up Mr Bush's executive orders licensing intensive interrogations on his first day in the Oval Office. They also want an immediate end to rendition, whereby suspects are flown to countries that practise torture
