MPs condemn U.S. terrorist activities

TEHRAN, Sept. 29 (MNA) -- In a statement issued here on Saturday, 215 Iranian lawmakers condemned the terrorist activities of the U.S. army and its intelligence service CIA and called upon the United Nations to put an end to these crimes.

In light of the following reasons, the aggressor United States’ Army and its Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) support terrorism and are terrorists:

1- The U.S. nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, and the use of depleted uranium in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkan region;

2- Invasion and occupation of certain countries such as Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan;

3- Boundless financial and political support for the racist and aggressor regime of Israel, and cooperation with Israel in its terrorist operations against Palestinians, the Lebanese people, and other regional countries;

4- Numerous cases of illegal support for the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, and certain terrorist groups such as Mojahedin Khalgh Organization;

5-The training of Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorist groups in Afghanistan by CIA agents during the Soviet occupation of this country;

6- Slaughtering innocent people by daily bombardments of civilian areas in Afghanistan and Iraq, torturing ordinary people in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and a number of secret jails especially in Europe, ad infinitum.

In their statement the MPs have stated that these activities are classified as flagrant violations of the UN Charter and other international human rights treaties and war conventions and thus the organizations involved in such activities are considered terrorists.

“We, as the representatives of the great Iranian nation, condemn the U.S. Army’s acts of invasion and fomenting of insecurity in the region, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, and call upon the United Nations to intervene and to halt the activities of the torture centers of Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and the U.S. secret jails in various countries.”

Escalation with Iran? Ask your Senator to Vote No

UPDATE: On Wednesday, September 26, the Kyl-Lieberman amendment was approved earlier today by the Senate. If passed into law, the amendment would designate Iran's army as a "terrorist group," a very aggressive measure that could push us closer to military conflict with Iran. (You can see how your Senators voted here.)

The good news is that we won some important victories. The sponsors of the amendment were compelled to weaken it substantially, deleting language that would have endorsed the use of military force to confront Iran. Plus, many Senators who voted to escalate conflict against Iran in the past voted with us today.

If you have a moment, please look up how your Senators voted on this amendment here. Then, call them either to thank them for voting "No," or express your disappointment that they voted "Aye." The Congressional switchboard is 202-224-3121.

Attack on Iran Said To Be Imminent

By BENNY AVNI
Staff Reporter of the Sun
September 28, 2007

UNITED NATIONS — In a sign that U.N. Security Council-based diplomacy is losing steam, a number of sources are reporting that a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities may be imminent. France and America also are pushing for tighter economic sanctions against Tehran, without U.N. approval.

Yesterday's edition of Le Canard Enchaîné, a French weekly known for its investigative journalism, reported details of an alleged Israeli-American plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. The frontpage headline read: "A report sent to the Elysée — Putin tells Tehran: They're going to bomb you!"

The Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, also expressed concerns to reporters in New York that an attack on Iran might be imminent.

Like most stories in the French paper, the article was based on unnamed sources who said that in order to reduce casualties, the attack against Iran is planned for October 15, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israel would bomb the first targets while America would orchestrate a second wave of strikes, the report said.

Burma: Hundreds may be dead, as junta tries to keep brutality unseen

Burma's military leaders locked down monasteries, arrested dissidents and set up barricades across Rangoon yesterday in an attempt to suffocate the waves of street demonstrations calling for an end to their rule.

They also tried to cut off ordinary people's communication with the outside world, heightening fears that the crackdown that appears to have knocked the wind from the demonstrations could become more violent.

Yet, despite the regime's best efforts, a day after security forces killed at least nine demonstrators – dissident groups say the total could be as high as 200 – hundreds again risked their lives to defy the government in small but angry protests across Burma's main city.

Locked inside their monasteries, or banished from the city, the cinnamon-robed monks who have formed the backbone to the dignified protest of the past week were largely gone. In their place were civilians, less disciplined and more angry, some with bandanas around their faces. Shouting, jeering groups moved quickly around the city in an attempt to gather in large numbers. But the military, with soldiers packed in the back of trucks, raced after them, quickly breaking up gatherings with threats and force.

State Dept. Tallies 56 Shootings Involving Blackwater on Diplomatic Guard Duty

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 — The State Department said Thursday that Blackwater USA security personnel had been involved in 56 shootings while guarding American diplomats in Iraq so far this year. It was the first time the Bush administration had made such data public.

Blackwater guard in Iraq said "stop shooting"

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A Blackwater security guard screamed at colleagues to "stop shooting" in an incident that left 11 Iraqi civilians dead, enraged the government and sparked reviews of security firms in Iraq, U.S. media said on Friday.

The Washington Post and The New York Times quoted unnamed U.S. officials saying they had been told at least one employee of the private American security firm pointed a gun at a fellow guard to try and curb the shooting in Baghdad on September 16.

Myanmar blocks the Internet

The two main ISP in Myanmar claim to have technical problems and are therefore blocking bloggers from leaking the truth to the world...
Numbers of blog posts have been reduced tremendously these days; nevertheless it’s very encouraging to see that some freedom bloggers are still in contact with the outside world and are working their best to keep the world up-to-date with latest Myanmar news.
Among them Niknayman excelled in the usage of CBox (blog comment box) facility to report live news of Burma activities. http://niknayman.cbox.ws/ is been viewed by thousands of visitors 24/7 and is one of the main source of news for overseas Myanmar. Usefulness and popularity of his CBox is growing rapidly and some of them created a clone English version CBox http://burmanews.cbox.ws/ for internationalization.
Today entries include:Ancient Ghost reported a blackout in Yangon.

Myanmar crowds taunt troops as crackdown draws outrage

YANGON (Reuters) - Crowds taunted soldiers and police who barricaded central Yangon on Friday to prevent more mass protests against Myanmar's 45 years of military rule and deepening economic hardship.
Potentially deadly games of cat and mouse went on for hours around the barbed-wire barriers in a city terrified of a repeat of 1988, when the army killed an estimated 3,000 people in crushing an uprising.
Few monks were among the crowds taunting and cursing the soldiers. When the troops charged, the protesters vanished into narrow side streets, only to emerge elsewhere to renew their abuse until darkness fell and an overnight curfew loomed.

Q&A on the Myanmar protests

ss_070926_monks_mwtease_standard

Click here for photographs from Myanmar

The largest anti-government demonstrations in nearly two decades have thrust Myanmar into the international spotlight, but for many the core issues remain murky. Here are answers to some common questions:

What are the protests about?
The military government’s decision in August to hike fuel prices by more than double was the immediate cause of the Myanmar protests. The rallies initially were organized by pro-democracy activists, but Buddhist monks became involved after military authorities forcibly broke up a peaceful protest in early September.

Who governs Myanmar?
The military has dominated the government for nearly half a century, but the generals have ruled with nearly absolute power since 1990, when the junta refused to hand over power after the main opposition party’s landslide electoral victory. President Bush has announced tighter new U.S. economic sanctions against Myanmar in addition to a pre-existing arms ban, a ban on exports, investment and financial services.

Who are the monks leading the protests?
The Buddhist clergy historically has been politically influential in Myanmar, nearly 90 percent of which is Buddhist. The 400,000-500,000 Buddhist monks have wielded considerable spiritual and political clout among the citizens for centuries. The government has tried to win the support of senior clergy, with mixed success at best. The monks have been called Myanmar’s “saffron army.”

Who is Aung San Suu Kyi?
Aung San Suu Kyi, 62, is the leader of Myanmar’s most prominent opposition group, the National League for Democracy, and the recipient of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. She has spent more than 11 of the past 18 years under some form of arrest under the country’s military regime. Her followers and other pro-democracy activists in the country are routinely harassed and imprisoned.

Is the country called Myanmar or Burma?
Both. The military regime changed the country’s name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989 after suppressing a popular uprising. The United Nations, France and Japan all accept the name Myanmar. But others, including Britain — the country’s former colonial ruler — and the United States, continue to use the name Burma under the rationale that the ruling junta has no democratic mandate. News organizations also differ: the British Broadcasting Corp. uses Burma, but The Associated Press and msnbc.com use Myanmar.

To which branch of Buddhism do the monks adhere?
The Buddhists of Myanmar observe the Theravada school, which is typically found in south and southeast Asia. The Theravada school focuses on personal liberation from craving and suffering.

Where and how big is Myanmar?
Myanmar is located in south-southeastern Asia, bordering the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh borders Myanmar to the west, China to the north and west, and Laos and Thailand to the east. It is around 421,000 square miles, or slightly smaller than the state of Texas. Nearly 50 million people live in the country.

U.S. tries to squeeze Myanmar leaders

It's about time Bush did something about something...

Bush himself issued a statement Thursday saying that "every civilized nation has a responsibility to stand up" to Myanmar's regime.

Updated: 2:52 p.m. ET Sept 27, 2007

YANGON, Myanmar - At least nine people, including a Japanese national, were killed Thursday when Myanmar soldiers fired on protesters, leading to new international condemnation that included U.S. economic sanctions against 14 military junta officials.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the action was being taken after President Bush on Tuesday announced the strategy before the U.N. General Assembly.

The action will freeze any assets that the targeted individuals have in U.S. banks or other financial institutions under U.S. jurisdiction. The order also prohibits any U.S. citizens from doing business with the designated individuals.

Will you wear a red shirt in support of Myanmar’s protesters?

From Thailand's Lost Boy

We had a call at work today from a Norwegian man who wanted to pass on this
message:

In support of our incredibly brave friends in Burma: May all the people
around the world wear a red shirt on Friday, September 28.

I agree with the blogger when he says;

I don’t think there is much a red shirt can do now.

But, I do think that if a ton of people are wearing red shirts the ones that aren't wearing red are going to wonder, "what's up?" and are going to ask the red-shirts, "why?", and then we can tell them that we are standing in solidarity with the people of Burma (Myanmar)...

Will you wear a red shirt in support of Myanmar’s protesters? Thailand's Lost Boy

Stop Torture in CIA Black Sites

Recently, President Bush issued an executive order outlining what parameters apply to the “CIA detention program.” The order came with classified guidance to the CIA that detailed what specific techniques were available to the CIA beyond those allowed by the Army Field Manual.

These techniques likely violate the ban on cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, and, especially when used in combination, could amount to torture. In addition, these techniques are being applied to a program of enforced disappearance and secret detentions in violation of international law. Urge the Senate to end torture in CIA black sites.

For Burma - Protect the protesters

"May we be free of torture, may there be peace in hearts and minds as our kindness spreads around the world."

Protect the protesters

"May we be free of torture."  This was the chant of pro-democracy protesters in Burma (Myanmar) this past week.  Yesterday, security forces began a violent crackdown on the protests, led by 30,000 red-robed monks.

The military government's forces clubbed and tear-gassed protesters, fired shots into the air, and arrested dozens if not hundreds of monks. Several people were reportedly shot to death.

You can take action now to prevent more violence by the military government. Send a message today asking the UN Security Council to oppose this violent crackdown and do everything in their power to prevent further bloodshed.

When the people of Burma last staged mass pro-democracy protests back in 1988, the military junta murdered thousands. But history does not have to repeat itself.

Please take action today  -- and ask your friends and family to do the same.  Together we can act now in solidarity with the brave people of Burma.

E-Mail Message Action;  For Burma - Protect the protestors

Ask President Bush to urge the UN Security Council members, especially the Permanent members like China, to immediately deploy a UN Security Council mission to Myanmar (Burma). This mission should act to resolve the human rights crisis and avert the risk of further violence and bloodshed. The Council should also consider the possibility of imposing an arms embargo and to address the dire human rights situation in Myanmar. The peaceful mass demonstrations taking place compare in scale to those in 1988, when security forces broke up massive pro-democracy demonstrations with deadly violence, killing thousands. »Learn more.

The U.S. Senate has just passed the Matthew Shepard Act!

WASHINGTON– In an historic step toward equality for GLBT Americans, the U.S. Senate voted to pass the Matthew Shepard Act, which updates and expands the federal hate crimes laws to include bias motivated violence based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, and disability, and provides new resources and tools to assist local law enforcement in prosecuting vicious crimes.

"For over a decade our community has worked tirelessly to ensure protections to combat violence motivated by hate and today we are the closest we have ever been to seeing that become a reality," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.  "Congress has taken an historic step forward and moved our country closer to the realization that all Americans, including the GLBT community, are part of the fabric of our nation.  The new leadership in Congress fully understands that for too long our community has been terrorized by hate violence.  And today, the US Senate has sent a clear message to every corner of our country that we will no longer turn a blind eye to anti-gay violence in America."

The Senate in a bipartisan vote of 60 to 39 accepted cloture which ended debate on the bill and then moved to approve the Matthew Shepard Act by a voice vote -- attaching it as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2008 Department of Defense Authorization bill.

I Got Flowers Today

a well known poem about domestic violence...

I got flowers today
It wasn’t my birthday or any other special day.
Last night we had a fight and he hit me,
But I know he is sorry
Cause I got flowers today

I got flowers today
It wasn’t our anniversary or any other special day.
Last night he threw me against the wall and started to choke me,
But I know he’s sorry,
Cause I got flowers today

I got flowers today
It wasn’t Mothers day or any other special day
I was so swollen and bruised I was ashamed to answer the door
But I know he’s sorry,
Cause I got flowers today

If I leave him, where will I go?
What about money? what about my kids?
It’s getting worse every time but I’m afraid to leave
But I know he’s sorry
Cause I got flowers today

I got flowers today
My family and friends filed by to see me
Asking why I never left him,
If I only had the strength and courage to, but I didn’t
So I got Flowers today

Subpoenas Served on ABC's Brian Ross/New York Post's Cindy Adams by 'DC Madam'

By Lori Price
www.legitgov.org
26 Sep 2007

Breaking CLG exclusive: Citizens for Legitimate Government (CLG) has learned that so-called DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, has issued subpoenas for the depositions of (i) Troy Burrus, the IRS case agent on Palfrey's case, for Friday, September 28th in Washington, D.C., and (ii) Brian Ross of ABC News, (ii) Cindy Adams of the New York Post and (iv) Bill Bastone of The Smoking Gun for Friday October 5th in New York City.

From Montgomery Blair Sibley, Jeane Palfrey's attorney:

Along with the criminal case against Jeane Palfrey, the government has also filed a civil forfeiture action seeking to take all her assets. Curiously, in the criminal action -- in which Palfrey could go to jail -- she is not allowed to gather information before trial by examinations of witnesses under oath. However, in the civil forfeiture action, such discovery before trial is allowed. Go figure.

Judge Kessler stopped the civil forfeiture action last March for six months to prevent Palfrey from getting information to help her defense in the civil and criminal cases. That stay order expired last week and I promptly issued subpoenas for the depositions of (i) Troy Burrus, the IRS case agent on Palfrey's case, for Friday, September 28th in Washington, D.C., and (ii) Brian Ross of ABC News, (ii) Cindy Adams of the New York Post and (iv) Bill Bastone of the Smokingun.com for Friday October 5th in New York City. Those subpoenas were served yesterday on the witnesses.

I expect both the government and the subpoenaed witnesses to aggressively fight Palfrey's attempt to get the basic information regarding why this matter was commenced by the government and how the government has acted since the seizing of all Palfrey's assets one year ago. Heaven forbid the truth comes out.

Bill O'Reilly's Ignorant, Racially Charged Comments

September 26, 2007

From Media Matters and;

David Brock,
President and CEO
Media Matters for America

Last Friday, while discussing his recent dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia's, a restaurant in Harlem, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly said that he "couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship." O'Reilly added: "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea.' "

Have trouble believing that anyone with their own television and radio program -- even Bill O'Reilly -- could get away with saying something so ignorant and racially charged? You can hear it for yourself or read the complete transcript right here.

» Tell Fox to Stop the Racially Divisive Coverage -- Contact them TODAY!

It gets worse.

When Fox News was forced to respond to O'Reilly's comments, the network issued a statement reading: "This is nothing more than left-wing outlets stirring up false racism accusations for ratings. It's sad."

Fox News' statement ignores the larger problem that comments like O'Reilly's present for the network's integrity, instead launching into an attack of news organizations that do not dismiss public outcry over racially charged commentary outright. Their response to the uproar sounds more like the spin you'd hear from a political campaign in damage control mode, than what you'd expect from a legitimate news organization.

» Tell Fox to Stop the Racially Divisive Coverage -- Contact them TODAY!

In fact, Fox's response clearly demonstrates that the problem goes much deeper than just O'Reilly. As Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented, this kind of ignorant, racial commentary is commonplace on Fox News and is part of a long history of racially divisive reporting and commentary.

Commenting on the demonstrations in Jena, Louisiana, during the September 21 broadcast of his radio show, another Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio host, John Gibson, said: "[W]hat they're worried about is a mirage of 1950s-style American segregation, racism from the South. They wanna fight the white devil. ... [T]here's no -- can't go fight the black devil. Black devils stalking their streets every night gunning down their own people -- can't go fight that. That would be snitchin'." (Full transcript here)

These recent comments by O'Reilly and Gibson are just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past three years, Media Matters has documented a clear pattern of racially divisive reporting and commentary by Fox News Radio and Fox News Channel hosts and guests. I've included many of those examples at the end of this email -- I hope you'll review them to see just how troubling this issue truly is.

» Tell Fox to Stop the Racially Divisive Coverage -- Contact them TODAY!

Fox needs to hear from you. Please contact the network today and let their hosts and reporters know that this type of commentary has no place on a legitimate cable news network -- it's time for them to clean up their act.

Debating Ahmadinejad at Columbia

posted September 25, 2007 (web only)

Jayati Vora

A tall man with white hair, wearing a US-flag print shirt and pants, patrolled the sidewalk at 116th and Broadway. He waved a huge American flag as he marched, in movements that were nearly metronomic in their consistency. Stacks of brochures sat on a bare and rickety table, waiting to be handed out to anyone who didn't look away quickly enough. Bystanders stared.

I hadn't been back to my former school almost since I graduated. Returning as an alumna of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the school that sponsored Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's talk here on Monday, I felt the puff of pride that Columbia had not backed down in the face of media pressure. I also felt just a little bit cheated that it was happening now, when I was attending as an outsider, rather than the first time his talk had been announced, in 2006, when I was still a sleep-deprived student.

The police officers stationed in and around the university, beginning at the platform of the subway that I had taken to get there, looked at everyone suspiciously. Women in dark, severe suits monitored the entry of the press, taking signatures and examining credentials. Everywhere, people in uniforms directed the human traffic and at certain entrances demanded identification. Fliers lined the walkway to the main quadrangle and littered the brick paths. Students milled around the campus, talking excitedly in tight groups or listening to the speakers outside Low Library. Homemade placards offered silent counterpoint to some of the speeches delivered at the podium. "Ahmadinejad Is not Iran Just Like Bush Is not America," said one. "We Say No to War on Iran," proclaimed another. And a third, my favorite, in black paint on a wood sheet: "Free Speech for All, Even Douche Bags."

Posted 09/25/2007 @ 1:02pm

Laura Flanders

"Jena is America," says Alan Bean, speaking of the Louisiana town where six black students are looking at decades in jail for a schoolyard brawl while white kids are facing nothing for hanging up nooses. Jena is America in the sense that the unequal justice there is not unique. There are "Jena Sixes" behind bars in every state. But it isn't America in the sense that the country as a whole has had no trouble at all ignoring Jena.

I hope it's not too late...

It's late but it's not too late, for all of America to act. In fact, truly massive public attention is needed right now as a white backlash builds in Louisiana. While Air America and National Public Radio move on, David Duke and his radio listeners are all over the Jena story. Last week, the former Ku Klux Klan leader announced his support for Jena's white residents (who voted overwhelmingly for him when he ran for Louisiana governor in 1991.) Since the civil rights demonstrators left, Jena familes are alone against the white supremacists who have started appearing. Over the weekend, a neo-Nazi Web site posted the names, addresses and phone numbers of some of the six black teenagers and their families and urged followers to find them and "drag them out of the house." A white driver was arrested in a nearby town, driving a pick up with nooses tied to the back fender. White extremist web sites and blogs are exploding and it's not just Klansmen and neo-Nazis posting hateful things.

It's late but it's not too late to answer: Is Jena America?

Whoa! How about that MoveOn.org-Petraeus ad. Quite the little brouhaha, huh?
So, what's up with all that, anyway?

On the right we have the GOP-propaganda machine making hay off the MoveOn ad as fast as it can, and doing well at it, as it usually does.
On the left – well, that's a lot harder to explain, because there's no longer a single left, but two:

Democrats, as my crusty old country uncle used to say, “don't know whether to shit or go blind -- so they walk around all day with one-eye closed farting.”
Hell, 23 of Dems actually voted with the Republican Senators yesterday to condemn the MoveOn.org ad. Prez candidates, Obama and Biden went into hiding, not voting at all. Hillary voted “No,” another attempt to fade the blood stains on her hands from her vote authorizing the war four years ago. (Seemed like the smart political thing to do at the time.)
Now establishment Democrats are furious with MoveOn for running that ad. Not because they disagree with the sentiment or message, but because it deflated the tidy little cloakroom soufle' they were cooking up with  “moderate” Republicans.  (You know, the same “moderate” Republicans who've been filibustering every effort to wind down Bush's war in Iraq.)
The MoveOn.org ad hit like a bunker-buster, collapsing those “bipartisan” efforts – which, had they succeeded would not have ended the war anyway. What they would have done, had they succeeded, is provide incumbent hacks in both parties an all-purpose legislative doodad to dangle in front of voters back home.

  • Dems would claim their success proved they were doing something to end the war.
  • Repubs would use the same legislation to prove they were not in lockstep with the most unpopular President since Nixon.

It would have been another of Washington's version of a “win-win.”
And, as viewed from the nitrous oxide-filled halls of Congress, the whole thing seemed to be going along swimmingly before the MoveOn ad ruined everything. Hell, even Republican voters were warming up to this ineffective Democrat-controlled Congress:

Republicans approve of a Democratic controlled Congress significantly more than do either Democrats or Independents. (Full Story)

But the MoveOn.org ad screwed up their plan. To which I say, so what?
And that's exactly what every Democrat in Congress should have said as well -- so what? Dicking with troop rotations was not what we sent to Washington to do when we voted them in last November, now was it? No. We sent them there to end this abortion of a war, and sooner rather than later.
But the MoveOn.org flap did much more than just expose a phony, baloney legislative three-card monty routine. That ad, and the commotion it caused, exposed nothing less than a political tectonic split on the left.
Like pack ice breaking up, it broke off a section carrying establishment Democrats, leaving the rest of us on a separate sheet.  And the two seem to have begun floating further and further apart with increasing speed. With each passing day communication between the two sheets become harder and harder. We now no longer can talk to each other. Now we shout.
Where they are going I cannot say. All I know is that it's not the same direction our sheet is heading. And where might that be? Don't know.
All I can way with certainty is that common sense tells us one of them headed for oblivion.

Columbia University Shows True American Values

Columbia University, by inviting Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak, has shown confidence in the wisdom and adultness of their students and our republic.
Ahmadinejad is the president of a major nation in a vital part of the world, and we should have enough self-assurance and belief in our own system of government, and in the intelligence of our college students, that we can let them (and our larger public) evaluate his words, whatever they may be.
To be terrified of his speaking there (or, for that matter, laying a wreath at Ground Zero) is behavior one would have expected from a fragile régime like Khrushchev’s USSR or Burma’s military junta, not the bold, brave, and fearless USA...

Outrage Dump: A partial list of perpetual hypocrisy

Republicans say they oppose illegal immigration because it's...illegal. Nobody should break the law. If that's the case, how can they tolerate: Violating the Hatch Act? Intentional contribution to air and water pollution? Politicizing legal appointments and firing well-qualified U.S. Attorneys?

The Federal War on Medical Marijuana Becomes a War on Children

Why risk provoking the American public's outrage by escalating its war on medical marijuana patients?

More stories by Dan Bernath

Automatic weapons. Check. Helicopters. Check. Dogs. Check. Bulletproof vests. Check.

You may not buy the government's characterization of its campaign against medical marijuana patients as a "war on drugs," but increasingly violent, militaristic tactics in recent months offer a troubling glimpse into the federal law enforcement community's mentality: To them, this is war.

Raids on medical marijuana dispensaries throughout California on July 17 by federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents, often with local law enforcement officers in tow, seemed designed to send a clear signal that the feds were deliberately escalating their war on medical marijuana patients.

The enemy, then, are people like Ronnie Naulls, a Riverside medical marijuana patient who owned two of the dispensaries raided that day.

A church-going family man who used medical marijuana to ease chronic pain from injuries sustained in a 2001 car accident, Naulls already had two successful businesses -- one as an IT consultant and another as a real estate property manager -- when he established the Healing Nations Collective to save fellow Corona patients the hours-long drive to Los Angeles for medicine.

By all accounts, Naulls ran his collectives with exemplary scrupulousness. He maintained strict dress codes and professional standards for all employees. He paid state taxes on the dispensaries -- amounting to several hundred thousand dollars a year -- even when loose tax regulations allowed other dispensary owners to slip through the cracks. Profits from the dispensaries went to local and national cancer organizations.

Nevertheless, at 5:50 a.m., July 17, Naulls' home and businesses were invaded by DEA agents armed with shotguns, automatic rifles -- even helicopters. They seized everything he owned: his businesses, his property, all of his accounts.

But that wasn't the worst of it. County child protective services came along on the raid and took Naulls' three daughters, aged 1 to 5, and charged him and his wife with child endangerment. They weren't even accused of breaking any state laws.

When Naulls spoke to his children in their foster home, the oldest said, "Daddy, we're ready to come home now. We promise to be good."

Of course they were too young to understand that they were victims of the strong-arm tactics of drug warriors whose goal was probably to make Naulls regret helping fellow patients receive their medicine in a safe, compassionate environment. Who cares if that means ruining a family financially, imprisoning the parents and traumatizing the children?

Homeland Security deputy secretary resigns

another rat to jump ship...

WASHINGTON — The Homeland Security Department's second-in-command resigned today, citing personal financial reasons.

Michael P. Jackson, the department's deputy secretary, has had a major hand in running the large department, particularly in putting in place the current management team. In an e-mail to staff today, Jackson said, "The simple truth, however, is that after over five years of serving with the president's team, I am compelled to depart for financial reasons that I can no longer ignore." Jackson's resignation is effective Oct. 26.

Jackson was deputy secretary of the Transportation Department between 2001 and 2003, during which time he helped set up the Transportation Security Administration. He came to the Homeland Security Department in March of 2005.

From late 2003 to 2005 Jackson worked in the private sector as senior vice president of AECOM Technology Corporation. In his e-mail today, Jackson said, "Today I become, in Washington's argot, a lame duck."

Bush quietly advising Hillary Clinton, top Democrats

I really wonder if this is true.  It seems like such a surreal notion that Bush would give Hillary Clinton advice about what she should do when she becomes president.  It's also scary. I guess it's decided then the Almighty GWB has declared Hillary Clinton president of the United States of America... icon7xx

Washington, D.C. (Map, News) - President Bush is quietly providing back-channel advice to Hillary Rodham Clinton, urging her to modulate her rhetoric so she can effectively prosecute the war in Iraq if elected president.

In an interview for the new book “The Evangelical President,” White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten said Bush has “been urging candidates: ‘Don’t get yourself too locked in where you stand right now. If you end up sitting where I sit, things could change dramatically.’ ”

Bolten said Bush wants enough continuity in his Iraq policy that “even a Democratic president would be in a position to sustain a legitimate presence there.”

“Especially if it’s a Democrat,” the chief of staff told The Examiner in his West Wing office. “He wants to create the conditions where a Democrat not only will have the leeway, but the obligation to see it out.”

On Sept. 20, tens of thousands of people marched in Jena, La. to demand immediate freedom for Mychal Bell and the Jena 6. The case of the Jena 6 has garnered international attention, and shone a spotlight on the racist nature of this country's criminal "injustice" system.

Although the message of the Sept. 20 protest was broadcast far and wide, just one day later, a Louisiana judge delivered another outrage. Mychal Bell, 17, was denied bail while awaiting an appeal of his recently overturned adult conviction.

Bell and the other five young men that make up the "Jena 6" were charged with crimes ranging from assault to attempted murder. Bell, the first convicted, recently had his case overturned by a court ruling that he had been improperly tried as an adult. His hopes of freedom, however, have been dashed yet again. It will only be the mobilization of the people that will win justice for Mychal Bell and the Jena 6.

It is time to turn up the heat. The Sept. 20 protest in Jena has to be replicated over and over across the country until the Six are free. The ANSWER Coalition is joining with the hundreds of other groups calling for the freedom of the Jena 6 and Mychal Bell. We are demanding that all the charges be dropped!

On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, people from all over the Washington DC community and northeastern region will stage an important demonstration in front of the Justice Department. The civil rights of Mychal Bell and all of the Jena 6 have been grossly violated. Mychal Bell's continued imprisonment is a flagrant miscarriage of justice.

"All those in the Washington DC area who believe in justice should be in front of the Justice Department on Oct. 2nd at 5pm. Injustice of this magnitude cannot be tolerated. Join with the ANSWER Coalition and other community organizations to Free Mychal Bell and end the persecution of all of the Jena 6."
-- Eugene Puryear, Howard University student and ANSWER organizer

Volunteers and activists are needed from throughout the northeast to organize for this demonstration. Email us at info@internationalanswer.org or call 202-544-3389 to find out how you can get involved.

Everyone should help spread the word by forwarding this email widely and by clicking here to print out flyers.

Israel's Raid on Syria: Prelude to a Nuke Crisis?

By Dan Ephron and Mark Hosenball

Newsweek

Oct. 1, 2007 issue - Sam Gardiner plays war for a living. A former Air Force colonel who helped write contingency plans for the U.S. military, Gardiner has spent the 20 years since his retirement staging war-simulation exercises for military and policy wonks within and on the fringes of government (he keeps his client list confidential). Lately, more of his work has focused on Iran and its nuclear program. Gardiner starts by gathering various experts in a room to play the parts of government principals—the CIA director, the secretary of State, leaders of other countries—and presents them with a scenario: Iran, for example, has made a dramatic nuclear advance. Then he sits back and watches the cycle of action and reaction, occasionally lobbing new information at the participants.

Iran's Ahmadinejad: No Attack on Israel

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: September 24, 2007

Filed at 2:03 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Monday that Iran would not launch an attack on Israel or any other country, and he does not believe the U.S. is preparing for war against Iran.

''Iran will not attack any country,'' Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press after being asked if it would ever make a first strike against Israel. Iran has always maintained a defensive policy, not an offensive one, he said, and has ''never sought to expand its territory.''

He said he did not believe the U.S. was preparing for war.

''I believe that some of the talk in this regard arises first of all from anger. Secondly, it serves the electoral purposes domestically in this country. Third, it serves as a cover for policy failures over Iraq.''
