TomPaine.com - The Tip Of The Iceberg

I agree wholeheartedly with this oped piece. I feel for those that have served our country and come home to substandard conditions at Walter Reed. But, being in low income housing myself I know that we live in the same, if not worse conditions in our own homes. The apartment that I share with my wife and son has mice, mold, and since we live on the first floor, the water that contiously floods our basement is no help either. All three of us suffer continously due to the mold. We are all allergic to mold as well. Typically, I'm not a whiner but when you pay 650 a month rent and you can't find anything better than what we're currently living in, what are we supposed to do?

Outrage has grown—as it should—over the mold, roaches, mice and poor living conditions found in Walter Reed Army Hospital. According to Rep. Harry Waxman, D-Calif., the chairman of the House government oversight committee, "This may be just the tip of the iceberg."

Congressman Waxman is correct, perhaps more than he realizes. The scandal of poor living conditions at the Army hospital is representative of a much larger problem facing hundreds of thousands of this nation's low- and moderate-income residents—they are living in substandard housing conditions, including mold, roaches and mice, that are causing or triggering serious and preventable illnesses.

In the same way that everyone expects hospitals to be a "clean and safe" place, we have that expectation of our homes. Yet housing is often overlooked as a hidden determinant to health. Substandard housing in particular can cause significant public health problems. An increasing body of evidence has shown strong associations between housing conditions and health.

For example, children are still being poisoned by lead paint—a neurotoxin that damages a child's developing brain resulting in irreversible brain damage, lower IQs and juvenile delinquency—almost 30 years after lead in paint was banned. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 310,000 children in 2002 were poisoned by lead; in 2005, 3,500 children were poisoned in Chicago alone. In over 90 percent of the cases, the lead dust was found in the home. According to Ralph Scott at the Alliance for Healthy Homes, "The real shame is that lead poisoning is entirely preventable. We can make homes lead safe."

The CDC estimates that annually 14,000 people die from radon-related cancer, 500 from carbon monoxide poisoning and 3,000 from house fires. These numbers don't begin to reflect the health care costs, lost work and missed school due to illness.
Another growing illness with links to the home is asthma. Airborne particles containing rodent feces, mold and other irritants in the home are known to be major contributors to asthma. The American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago reports that asthma attacks send some 70,000 Chicagoans to the emergency room every year. One recent study showed that the prevalence of asthma is as high as 30 percent in some low-income minority neighborhoods. Many of these neighborhoods have high concentrations of older housing stock that is badly in need of maintenance—even more so than Walter Reed Hospital.

The solutions to this kind of neglect are fairly straightforward. A recent study in Harlem, New York, found that an ambitious program in which health care workers collaborated with housing advocates was able to virtually eliminate the need for overnight hospitalization due to asthma attacks. The public health nurses educated residents about the proper use of medicines to manage the illness and housing advocates worked to rid the homes of rats, roaches, mold and other asthma triggers. The study found that while there is no cure for asthma, the disease could be controlled through a combination of medicine and improved environmental conditions.

In the same way that there is no reason for wounded vets to live in substandard conditions, there is no reason that our children should be getting sick in their homes. We can do something about it, but it takes investing in maintaining our housing stock. Despite this growing body of evidence linking health and homes, the president's budget for fiscal 2008 contains a decrease in funding for the Healthy Homes Program. If anything, we should be increasing our investment and making sure that no one lives in a home that makes them sick.

So, the neglect of Walter Reed Army Hospital is just the tip of an iceberg of general neglect of our housing stock, especially for low- and moderate-income people, that will cost our nation dearly in the long run.

Rated R rant on the miscreant failures in the White House from Bill Maher

New Rule - Traitors don't get to question my patriotism. What could be less patriotic than constantly screwing things up for America? You know, it's literally hard to keep up with the sheer volume of scandals in the Bush administration. Which is why I like to download the latest scandals right onto my IPod. That way, I can catch up on this week's giant f**k up on my drive into work.

In fact, Bush has so many scandals he could open a chain of "Bush Scandal and F**k Up" theme restaurants. Hmmm, should I get the Harriet Miers Meatloaf, or the Katrina Crabcakes?

You know, not to generalize, but the 29 percent of people who still support President Bush are the ones who love to pronounce themselves more patriotic than the rest of us. But just saying you're patriotic is like saying you have a...

... big c**k. If you have to say it, chances are it's not true. And indeed, the Party that flatters itself that they protect America better is the Party that has exhausted the military, left the ports wide open, and purposely outed a CIA agent, Valerie Plame. That's not treason anymore, outing a spy? Did I mention it was one of our spies?

And how despicable that Bush's lackeys attempted to diminish this crime by belittling her service like she was just some chick who hung around the CIA. An intern really. Groupie if you want to be mean about it. No. Big lie. Valerie Plame was the CIA's operational officer in charge of counter-proliferation. Which means she tracked loose nukes. So, when Bush said, as he once did, that his absolute, number one priority was preventing terrorists from getting loose nukes, okay, that's what she worked on. That's what she devoted her life to. Staying undercover for 20 years. Maintaining two identities every God-damned day. This is extraordinary service to your country. Valerie Plame was the kind of real life secret agent George Bush dreams of being when he's not too busy pretending to be a cowboy or a fighter pilot.

CIA agents are troops. This was a military assassination of one of our own done through the press, ordered by Karl Rove. He said of Valerie Plame, quote, "She's fair game," and then Cheney shot her.

George Bush likes to claim that he doesn't question his critics' patriotism, just their judgment. Well, let me be the first of your critics, Mr. President, to question your judgment and your patriotism. Because let's not forget why they did it to her. Because Valerie Plame was married to this guy Joe Wilson who the Bush people hated because he busted them on one of their bulls**t reasons for invading Iraq. He was sent to the African country of Niger to see if Niger was selling nuclear fuel to Iraq. They weren't. It was bulls**t. And he said so. In fact, his report was called, "Niger, Please."

Valerie Plame's husband told the truth about their lies, so they were willing to jeopardize an entire network of spies to ruin her life. Wow. Even the mob doesn't go after your family.

Mark Twain said, "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." And I say Valerie Plame is a patriot because she spent her life serving her country. Scooter Libby is not because he spent his life serving Dick Cheney. Valerie Plame kept her secrets. The Bush administration leaked like the plumbing at Walter Reed.

In the year 2008, I really think that Hillary Clinton should run for president on a platform of restoring honor and integrity to the Oval Office.

Alcohol, tobacco among worst drugs - CNN.com

very cool...someone is finally getting it? But, as we all know a simple study like this will never make a difference with the right wingers in this country...

The researchers asked two groups of experts -- psychiatrists specializing in addiction and legal or police officials with scientific or medical expertise -- to assign scores to 20 different drugs, including heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines, and LSD.

Nutt and his colleagues then calculated the drugs' overall rankings. In the end, the experts agreed with each other -- but not with the existing British classification of dangerous substances.

Heroin and cocaine were ranked most dangerous, followed by barbiturates and street methadone. Alcohol was the fifth-most harmful drug and tobacco the ninth most harmful. Cannabis came in 11th, and near the bottom of the list was ecstasy.

According to existing British and U.S. drug policy, alcohol and tobacco are legal, while cannabis and ecstasy are both illegal. Previous reports, including a study from a parliamentary committee last year, have questioned the scientific rationale for Britain's drug classification system.

Lies We Teach Teenagers

As the mother of a teen I found this op-ed piece from TomPaine.com to be extremely interesting...

Julie Sternberg is a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union Reproductive Freedom Project.

Adolescence. We’ve all been there, and I would bet that most everyone remembers how awkward it can be. Hormones surge. Bodies transform. And suddenly there are a lot of questions about sex, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Teens often cobble together answers to these new and embarrassing questions, yet the information they come up with is often uniformed, ill-advised, or downright wrong.

And so we, the adults, attempt to help teens navigate these tricky waters with instruction in school that provides truthful information, helping them make healthy choices and avoid the perils of unintended pregnancy and disease.

The problem is somewhere along the way this system was hijacked by an ideological agenda, leaving teens to suffer the consequences.

Spc. Jamaal Addison's mother describes him as an angel. He died on the fourth day of the Iraq war at the age of 22. "He was a hero," she said. "But he was a hero long before he ever got killed in this war."

Her words could also speak for the thousands of others killed in the invasion and occupation of Iraq that began four years ago today. Jamaal's story is one of many captured by a new, on-line video project called Iraq Veterans Memorial -- the latest from director Robert Greenwald and the folks at Brave New Films. [WATCH]

"While making Iraq for Sale, we were inspired and moved by the soldiers we interviewed. They were young, very smart and extremely patriotic. When we realized the fourth anniversary of the war was approaching we wanted to do something to honor people like them who were not lucky enough to return home," said Tracy Fleischman of Brave New Films.

"We were inspired by the Vietnam Memorial and the AIDS quilt -- which both bring tremendous loss of life to a human scale. We decided to use our medium -- film -- to create something similar. It was also important to us that politics not be a part of this project; we simply wanted to honor these young men and women and create something people with varying opinions could come together around."

The videos provide a human face, not just of those who have been killed, but of the people they left behind -- brothers and sisters, parents, children, friends, lovers, cousins, comrades. The men and women who were killed were more than service members -- in the words of those who loved them -- they were leaders, ambassadors, peacemakers, superheroes, poets, artists, athletes, dreamers, and jokers.

today's quotations on Peace...

"I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it."
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 - 1969)

"Every day we do things, we are things that have to do with peace. If we are aware of our life..., our way of looking at things, we will know how to make peace right in the moment, we are alive."
Thich Nhat Hanh

"If you want peace, stop fighting. If you want peace of mind, stop fighting with your thoughts."
Peter McWilliams, Life 101, 1991

"First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others."
Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471), 1420

"Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people."

TomPaine.com - Sitting In To Stop The War

I agree wholeheartedly with Micheal McPherson. I think all Americans need to protest this unlawful and inhumane war...

Peace to all that can attend the rally at the Pentagon!!! Be strong in your beliefs and all will be well. Civil Disobedience is a peaceful tactic used very successfully by Mahtma Gandhi & Martin Luther King Jr. to make major changes in human rights throughout the world.

I won't be able to attend the rally and March to the Pentagon down to Wasington, D.C. like I had originally hoped for and posted about. I hope you can! If you'd like to read more about the protest visit A.N.S.W.E.R. and rally for peace! I have to have back surgery in April and I couldn't physically make the trip from New England down to DC...everyone keeps telling me that there will be more protests I can attend later on...which doesn't make me feel better at all...I want this war to end...everyone does...but no one is making it stop.

Michael T. McPhearson is the executive director of Veterans For Peace, which is supporting nonviolent civil disobedience in local cities across the United States March 16-19, 2007. This is an excerpt of a letter describing his act of civil disobedience at a congressional office.

There are many who ask, “Do you really think being arrested will make a difference?” No, I do not know if my refusal to leave and subsequent arrest will make a difference. However, I do know that inaction will change nothing.

Lastly I ask myself, if not now when? After nearly four years of protest,
over 3,100 dead U.S. service members, tens to hundreds of thousands of
dead Iraqis who are guilty of nothing but living in Iraq, obvious lies
by our leaders that took us to war, a possible war with Iran, an
election for a change in direction, no change of direction by our
President and an indecisive Congress who needs to be pushed in the right
direction—when would be a better time to give civil disobedience a try?

Thousands of Americans agree. They will take action with their bodies and hearts on the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq through the national Declaration of Peace initiative , which represents more than 800 local and national groups and has organized more than a hundred actions in 30 states.

We are at a critical moment. Congress will soon vote for a $90 billion
appropriation that could fund the war until the end of President Bush’s term.
After this vote, Congress will have little power to end the war. We need to
flood Congress with letters, phone calls, emails and faxes demanding they end
funding. We must show up at their door in force. If enough of us sit in, they
will end the war. If we don’t, they won’t. Maintaining a majority and a gaining
the presidency is the priority of the Democrats. Ours is ending the war.

Suicide Was the Only Way Out of Iraq for Col. Westhusing

"Life needs trust. Trust is no more for me here in Iraq."
-Col. Ted Westhusing-

Ted Westhusing was a true believer. And that was his fatal flaw.

A colonel in the U.S. Army, Westhusing had a good job teaching English at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was a devout Catholic who went to church nearly every Sunday. He had a wife and three young children.

He didn't have to go to Iraq. But Westhusing was such a believer that he volunteered for what he thought was a noble cause. At West Point, Westhusing sought out people who opposed the war in an effort to change their minds. "He absolutely believed that this was a just war," said one officer who was close to him. "He was wholly enthusiastic about this mission." His tour of duty in Iraq was to last six months.

About a month before he was to return to his family -- on June 5, 2005 -- Westhusing was found dead in his trailer at Camp Dublin in Baghdad. At the time, he was the highest-ranking American soldier to die in Iraq. The Army's Criminal Investigation Command report on Westhusing's death explained it as a "perforating gunshot wound of the head and Manner of Death was suicide."

He was 44.

At about 1:15 in the afternoon, Westhusing was discovered in trailer 602A. Near his body was a note addressed to his commanders, Petraeus and Fil. Written in large, block letters, it read:

Thanks for telling me it was a good day until I briefed you. [Redacted name] -- You are only interested in your career and provide no support to your staff -- no msn [mission] support and you don't care. I cannot support a msn that leads to corruption, human right abuses and liars. I am sullied -- no more. I didn't volunteer to support corrupt, money grubbing contractors, nor work for commanders only interested in themselves. I came to serve honorably and feel dishonored. I trust no Iraqi. I cannot live this way. All my love to my family, my wife and my precious children. I love you and trust you only. Death before being dishonored any more. Trust is essential -- I don't know who trust anymore. [sic] Why serve when you cannot accomplish the mission, when you no longer believe in the cause, when your every effort and breath to succeed meets with lies, lack of support, and selfishness? No more. Reevaluate yourselves, cdrs [commanders]. You are not what you think you are and I know it.

COL Ted Westhusing

No war with Iran!!!

President Bush continues to edge toward war with Iran. While Bush Administration officials publicly deny any plans to attack Iran, their actions demonstrate the contrary.

In order to hinder a new Bush war, the House leadership initially agreed to a provision in the draft Supplemental Appropriations bill for the Iraq war (the same bill that contains language mandating an exit from Iraq) that would require the president to seek congressional authorization before launching a military attack against Iran.

But on Monday, under pressure from House members of both parties, the House leadership deleted the no war with Iran provision from the supplemental funding bill.

Please ask your Representative to tell the House leadership to include the no war with Iran provision in the Supplemental Appropriations Bill. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard toll-free at 800-903-0682 and they will connect you to your Representative.

President Bush has taken several steps towards attacking Iran, including sending two aircraft carrier strike groups to the Gulf region, deploying Patriot air defense systems to Iraq, and repeatedly accusing the Iranian government of sponsoring attacks against American troops in Iraq.

The BBC reported on February 20 that the U.S. has developed a contingency plan for air strikes on Iran that includes not only nuclear sites, but also most of the country’s military infrastructure.

Council for a Livable World opposes Iran’s nuclear aspirations and is horrified by some of the disgusting statements by Iran’s President Ahmadinejad. But we urge the U.S. and Iran to negotiate a solution to our disagreements rather than engaging in war.

We can’t wait until it’s too late. The first vote on the Iraq supplemental bill could happen as soon as this Thursday, March 15. Your call in the next 48 hours could make a difference.

Congress needs to know that the American people do not want another disastrous war in the Middle East. Please ask your Representative to tell the House leadership to include the no war with Iran provision in the supplemental spending bill. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard toll-free at 800-903-0682 and they will connect you to your Representative.

Gen. Pace: Homosexuality "Immoral"

I believe war is much more immoral than who I chose to love. War is Murder. War is Uncivilized. Love is not immoral. How can love be immoral?

WASHINGTON—The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday he considers homosexuality to be immoral and the military should not condone it by allowing gay personnel to serve openly, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace likened homosexuality to adultery, which he said was also immoral, the newspaper reported on its Web site.

"I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way," Pace told the newspaper in a wide-ranging interview.

Petition Demanding Immediate and Unconditional Release of Women’s Rights Defenders Arrested in Tehran on March 4, 2007

Send this petition to:
His Excellency Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi
Mr. Golam-Ali Haddad-Adel, the leader of the Iranian Parliament

Subject:
Petition Demanding Immediate and Unconditional Release of Women’s Rights Defenders Arrested in Tehran on March 4, 2007

Petition:

Your Excellency,

We, the undersigned, are writing to you to express our great concern about the recent persecutions and prosecutions of the women’s rights defenders in Iran. We are especially dismayed at the news of the recent arrests of 38 women’s rights defenders on March 4, 2007, in Tehran while gathering in a peaceful protest in front of the Islamic Revolutionary Court. Furthermore, we are distressed by the use of unnecessary violence by the National Security Police officers against these women which has led to some cases of physical injury.

According to Article 27 of the Iranian constitution, “Public gatherings and marches may be freely held, provided arms are not carried and that they are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam.” And these women had peacefully gathered to show their solidarity with the 5 women activists who were on trial for their participation in a previous peaceful protest.

We call upon you to ensure the safety and security of all the people arrested at the peaceful gathering in front of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran on Sunday, March 4, including the following women, and their immediate and unconditional release.

Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh, Shadi Sadr, Asieh Amini, Nooshin Ahmadi Khorasani, Parvain Ardalan, Nahid Keshavarz, Mahboubeh Hosseinzadeh, Niloofar Golkar, Parastoo Dokoohaki, Maryam Mirza, Mariam Hossein Khah, Nahid Jafari, Minoo Mortezayee Langroodi, , Fatemeh Govarayee, Shahla Entesari, Soosan Tahmasbi, Azadeh Forghani, Jila Bani Yaghoub, Nahid Entesari, Saghi Laghaee, Saghar Laghaee, Elnaz Ansari, Sara Imanian, Jelveh Javaheri, Zara Amjadian, Zeinab Peyghambarzadeh, Nasrin Afzali, Mahnaaz Mohammadi, Somayeh Farid, Farideh Entesari, Sarah Loghmani, and Rezan Moghaddam.

Conservative star turns out to be star of gay porn as well [VIDEO]

Joe. My. God., with a little biographical background on Cpl. Matt Sanchez, a third-year Columbia University student and USMC reservist who has been making a name for himself on the right-wing circuit and was recently honored at the CPAC where his BFF Coulter called John Edwards a faggot:

Now, if you're like me, you might think, "Hmm, 36 years old and he's a junior in college and only a corporal in the Marines?" Odd, but not totally implausible. But Sanchez' face tinkled a few gay bells out there in fairyland, and last night I began to get emails letting me know that his rather late appearance on the Ivy League scene was because Sanchez has had a lengthy career in gay porn, working under the names Rod Majors and Pierre LaBranche, starring in such art films as Jawbreaker, Donkey Dick, and Glory Holes Of Fame 3, where his "11-inch uncut monster cock" earned him a devoted following.
Now, porn stars are entitled to enter the miliary, although Sanchez obviously had to do it on the downlow. Porn stars are entitled to have a right-wing ideology, even though the very people he supports would love to see gay porn stars strung up by the nuts. (Wait, have I seen that movie?) But, Oh.The.Irony. of Sanchez appearing with Bill O'Reilly who only a couple of days [ago] went apoplectic over San Francisco's "Colt Studio Day." And OH, the irony of Ann "Faggot" Coulter happily posing with Sanchez for a photo-op. The right-wing has gobbled this porn hunk up with a spoon, never knowing that tons of men have gobbled up his monster cock ON FILM.

Sanchez shares a lot in common with Jeff Gannon: he's an escort, too! More on Dirty Sanchez from Tom Bacchus (NSFW) and from Andy Towle--who briefly dated Sanchez pre-porn. Hot!

Seriously, can anyone think of anything more hilarious than a Conservative Political Action Conference that has Ann Coulter calling a Democratic presidential contender a faggot and a gay porn star/escort being feted? Oh--and here's the most awesome part: The Republican presidential contender (Romney) who introduced Coulter has been running away from his gay rights record. Meanwhile, the Democratic presidential contender (Edwards) supports the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, which would have allowed the celebrated soldier to serve openly in the military--and then his background wouldn't have bitten his new conservative friends in their collective butt, because they never would have associated with an openly gay soldier in the first place, which makes their presumably unwitting association with a gay porn star and escort (for the second time!) all the more bloody delightful.

Brilliant stuff. Truly.

On Thursday, the House Democratic Majority unveiled a new plan to end the war in Iraq, strengthen our security and provide our troops with the support they deserve. Our proposal establishes clear benchmarks in order to hold the Bush Administration and the Iraqi government accountable, and sets a firm timetable for bringing our combat troops home. President Bush has already threatened to veto this plan. We need your help to overcome his opposition and change direction in Iraq.

  • It establishes a timetable to bring our combat troops home within the next 18 months and is consistent with the unanimous recommendations of the independent bipartisan Iraq Study Group (Baker-Hamilton Commission). Depending on circumstances, all combat troops could be home as early as December 2007 but no later than August 2008.
  • We impose real benchmarks to hold the Iraqi government accountable. If the Iraqi government fails to meet its obligations, the redeployment of our combat troops would begin immediately.
  • Our plan refocuses our military on defeating the Al-Qaeda terrorists in Afghanistan who were responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001.
  • The House Democratic plan requires that our troops be adequately equipped and trained before they are sent into battle.
  • Finally, we insist upon top-notch medical care and first-class benefits for our military personnel and the new generation of veterans. Our wounded soldiers need to be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

This is a plan that truly supports our troops. It is a smart, strategic policy that strengthens our national security and ensures that our soldiers get the training, equipment and support they deserve.

However, our success is far from certain. You know the Bush Administration and its Republican Rubber Stamp allies in Congress will continue to stand in the way of change in Iraq. In fact, President Bush has already threatened to veto this plan.

Click here to tell Republicans in Washington it's time to truly support the troops. Become a citizen co-sponsor of the House Democrats' plan to end the war in Iraq.

We need your help today to end the war in Iraq, make America safer and support our troops. An overwhelming majority of Americans support the Democratic plan to demand results in Iraq and to set a responsible timetable for bringing our combat troops home. That's why they voted for change in both houses of Congress.

But we've seen that President Bush and Republicans still won't listen to the American people. The only way we can overcome their opposition is by using our majority to build a movement that cannot be stopped. By becoming a citizen co-sponsor today, you are helping us take the very first step.

The U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act gives the American people a real alternative to the failed approach of the Bush Administration. We’ve seen the terrible consequences of President Bush’s failed policy in Iraq. It has made us less, not more, secure. Moreover, our troops have not had adequate equipment to protect them in Iraq, nor the proper health care to treat the wounded who return home.

I will stand with House Democrats today and become a citizen co-sponsor of the House Democrats’ plan to end the war in Iraq, strengthen our security and provide our troops with the support they deserve

"Prevent President Bush from attacking Iran without Congressional approval"

The Petition

Dear Member of Congress:

While Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other Bush Administration officials have repeatedly denied planning for a war with Iran, evidence is increasingly pointing in the opposite direction. President Bush has ordered two aircraft carrier strike groups into the Gulf region, deployed Patriot air defense systems to Iraq, and repeatedly accused the Iranian government of sponsoring attacks against American troops in Iraq.

I urge you to support the bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) and Representative Walter Jones (R-NC) that would prohibit an attack on Iran without prior congressional approval.

The BBC reported on February 20 that the U.S. has developed a contingency plan for air strikes on Iran that includes not only nuclear sites, but also most of the country’s military infrastructure. The U.S. would launch the strikes, according to the BBC, if one of two “triggers” occurred: confirmation that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon or a high-casualty attack on US forces that could be traced directly back to Tehran.

While estimates from the U.S. government itself put Iran five to ten years away from acquiring a nuclear weapon, concerns are that the Bush Administration is laying the foundation for claims that Tehran is responsible for attacking U.S. troops in Iraq and that this will be used as a rationale for an attack.

I urge you to support efforts to prohibit President Bush from attacking Iran without Congressional approval.

"Faggot" is dangerous

To my 14 y/o son the term "faggot" is dangerous because he has 2 Mom's. Since he is in middle school many of his peers like to tease him about this fact. It pains him because no one understands that his Moms love him very much and as he says, "you're not faggots, gay, or anything but my Moms."

Posted by Pam Spaulding at 8:26 AM on March 6, 2007.

When someone hurls the new F-bomb at you, what do you think it's referring to? Ann doesn't think it has anything to do with sexual orientation. On Faux News last night (she appeared on there rather than debate John Aravosis on CNN), she also bleated that "It isn't offensive to gays. It has nothing to do with gays."

Faggot. (Kevin Aviance brutally gay-bashed in East Village)

Well, now I guess the conservative movement has to make a choice, and it'll probably be the wrong one -- it will continue to love Coulter because she represents The Base. This is who they are, despite the efforts of a few bloggers who were at that meeting and were offended enough to publish an open letter telling people to stop giving Coulter a public platform.

According to Think Progress, David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union (a co-sponsor of the CPAC), has he not said whether she'll be invited back again. Andrew Sullivan received this terse email from ACU:

ACU and CPAC leave it to our audience to determine whether comments are appropriate or not. "Ann Coulter is known for comments that can be both provocative and outrageous. That was certainly the case in her 2007 CPAC appearance and previous ones as well. But as a point of clarification, let me make it clear that ACU and CPAC do not condone or endorse the use of hate speech," said David A. Keene, ACU Chairman.

Faggot. (Gay Bashing Victim Dies After Family Removes Life Support)

At least some companies know what the word "faggot" means -- Verizon, Sallie Mae and Georgia-based NetBank have pulled ads from Coulter's web site. A NetBank rep said: Coulter's web page "is not the kind of site we want to be on." Verizon: "This one could be considered an extreme political Web site, should be off the list, and now it is off the list."

Again, this is less about Coulter than it is about the fact that...

... she is a proponent of homophobia (and clearly schoolyard bullying) if she is going to spew it's a harmless word without a specific and well-known meaning.

People die, lose their jobs, are beaten and harassed because of homophobia. Is this what the GOP and the conservative movement stands for? That's fine with me, just don't try to pretend that's not what Coulter is saying.

Faggot. (72-year-old disabled gay man killed)

History has shown that the party of Bush has gone out of its way to be hostile toward gays and lesbians, its leaders pushing legislation to restrict and deny civil rights solely because of someone's orientation.

The GOP has been taken over by extremists and what we are looking at is a fight between the gay-baiting Base and the social moderates who have been silenced and out in the wilderness for years.

The party can choose its path, but the homophobes in the party aren't going down easily. Those in their movement need to step up and not just talk about Coulter, but about why too many conservatives and the GOP feel the need to rely on bashing LGBT citizens to make a point.

Israel, Iran, U.S. have the most negative images

and this is surprising to anyone?

LONDON - Israel, Iran and the United States were the countries with the most negative image in a globe-spanning survey of attitudes toward 12 major nations. Canada and Japan came out best in the poll, released Tuesday.

The survey for the British Broadcasting Corp.'s World Service asked more than 28,000 people to rate 12 countries — Britain, Canada, China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Russia, the United States and Venezuela — as having a positive or negative influence on the world.

Israel was viewed negatively by 56 percent of respondents and positively by 17 percent; for Iran, the figures were 54 percent and 18 percent. The United States had the third-highest negative ranking, with 51 percent citing it as a bad influence and 30 percent as a good one. Next was North Korea, which was viewed negatively by 48 percent and positively by 19 percent.

Canada had the most positive rating in the survey, with 54 percent viewing it positively and 14 percent negatively. It was followed by Japan and France.

Respondents were also asked their views of the 27-member European Union; 53 percent saw it as positive and 19 percent as negative.

$93 Billion MORE for the Bush-Cheney War?

$93 Billion MORE for the Bush-Cheney War?

Call Congress on Monday and Tuesday to Vote No on the Iraq War "Supplemental"

The House Appropriations Committee is about to vote on whether to give Bush and Cheney $93 billion more for the Iraq War, on top of the $363 billion they have already spent to create a historic catastrophe based entirely on lies that has increased global terrorism by 700%.

This will bring total war spending to $456 billion - every penny of which has been borrowed so our children and grandchildren will have to pay for the Bush-Cheney War. It has also cost the lives of 3,171 U.S. troops and an estimated 655,000 Iraqi civilians, many tortured to death by militia trained by the U.S.

This is not what we elected a Democratic majority to do.

1. On Monday, Call Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee

If your Congress Member is a Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, please phone their office as soon as you can on Monday and tell him/her to vote against the supplemental spending bill in committee.

We are not interested in excuses or fancy strategies. Voting No when the Supplemental reaches the the full House is not enough; nor is voting for amendments to "improve" the bill. Every Democrat must Vote No on the Supplemental in the Appropriations Committee.

Democratic Members of the House Appropriations Committee: David R. Obey (Chair), John P. Murtha, Norman D. Dicks, Alan B. Mollohan, Marcy Kaptur, Peter J. Visclosky, Nita M. Lowey, José E. Serrano, Rosa L. DeLauro, James P. Moran, John W. Olver, Ed Pastor, David E. Price, Chet Edwards, Robert E. "Bud" Cramer, Jr., Patrick J. Kennedy, Maurice D. Hinchey, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Sam Farr, Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., Carolyn C. Kilpatrick, Allen Boyd, Chaka Fattah, Steven R. Rothman, Sanford Bishop, Marion Berry, Barbara Lee, Tom Udall, Adam Schiff, Michael Honda, Betty McCollum, Steve Israel, Tim Ryan, C.A "Dutch" Ruppersberger, Ben Chandler, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Ciro Rodriguez.

Call 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative's office. Or find their number at http://www.democrats.com/congress

2. On Tuesday, Call All 435 House Members

Tuesday is the day Democrats.com is in charge of trying to shut down the Congressional switchboard with citizen calls urging Representatives to vote No on the Iraq War Supplemental. Once again, voting for amendments to "improve" the bill is not good enough for us.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the White House will ignore restrictions placed on the war by Congress. That is why cutting off the funds is the only way to end the war.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) is leading the fight to end the war. Tony Trupiano of Progressive Democrats of America has an excellent podcast interview with Woolsey:
http://blog.pdamerica.org/?p=1009

Americans are now solidly (71%-23%) against the Bush-Cheney war. A majority (51%-46%) support funding restrictions. Of course the views of the majority of Americans are never heard on TV, so that's why calling Congress directly is essential.

Call 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative's office. Or find their number at http://www.democrats.com/congress

Your calls on Tuesday are part of a rolling series of call-in days with the same message coming from numerous organizations:

Impeachment Race in the States

In New Mexico, the Judiciary Committee will be the third Senate committee to vote on impeachment, probably Monday afternoon. If it passes Judiciary it will go to the full Senate for an historic vote. Our NM impeachment coordinator, Leland Lehrman, has a full report:
http://mothermedia.org

In Washington State, several hundred citizens participated in an ethusiastic rally outside the state house on Thursday. Speakers included Phil Burk of ImpeachBush.TV, Col. Ann Wright, and Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson. The deadline for Sen. Eric Oemig's resolution SJM8016 is March 14, but it will only come up for a vote if Senate Majority Leaders Lisa Brown, Tracy Eide, and Harriet Spanel give their approval. Details here:
http://www.washingtonforimpeachment.org/impeach/

Senator Patty Murray (D) and Rep. Jay Inslee (D) are pressuring state Democrats to block the impeachment resolution using completely dishonest arguments which treat impeachment advocates like idiots. Bob Fertik replies:

So does Dave Lindorff:

In Vermont, Newfane Selectman Dan DeWalt led a Town Meeting Democracy Tour with Vermont veterans, Cindy Sheehan, and John Nichols (who filed this report). Town Meetings will be held this week and impeachment resolutions will be considered in as many as 44 towns. It's all on DeWalt's excellent blog:
http://www.vtimpeach.com

In the progressive media, more and more voices are calling for impeachment. Bloggers Tristero and Poputonian of Hullabaloo.blogspot.com and Ian Welsh of Agonist are speaking out. Air America's Laura Flanders interviewed our own David Swanson, and Mike Papantonio discussed Dick Cheney's impeachment with Florida attorney John Morgan.

Do your favorite bloggers and radio talk show hosts support impeachment? We're keeping track! If they don't, urge them to make a pro-impeachment statement and send us a link:

A Preview of Bush's 'Attack Iran' Speech

Has the justification for war with Iran already been drawn up? A careful reading of Bush's statements on Iran could preview the actual list of charges he might make in his case for attack.

Sometime this spring or summer, barring an unexpected turnaround by Tehran, President Bush is likely to go on national television and announce that he has ordered American ships and aircraft to strike at military targets inside Iran.

We must still sit through several months of soap opera at the United Nations in New York and assorted foreign capitals before this comes to pass, and it is always possible that a diplomatic breakthrough will occur -- let it be so! -- but I am convinced that Bush has already decided an attack is his only option and the rest is a charade he must go through to satisfy his European allies. The proof of this, I believe, lies half-hidden in recent public statements of his, which, if pieced together, provide a casus belli, or formal list of justifications, for going to war.

Three of his statements, in particular, contained the essence of this justification: his January 10 televised speech on his plan for a troop "surge" in Iraq, his State of the Union Address of January 23, and his first televised press conference of the year on February 14. None of these was primarily focused on Iran, but the President used each of them to warn of the extraordinary dangers that country poses to the United States and to hint at severe U.S. reprisals if the Iranians did not desist from "harming U.S. troops." In each, moreover, he laid out various parts of the overall argument he will certainly use to justify an attack on Iran. String these together in one place and you can almost anticipate what Bush's speechwriters will concoct before he addresses the American people from the Oval Office sometime later this year. Think of them as talking points for the next war.

The first of these revealing statements was Bush's January 10th televised address on Iraq. This speech was supposedly intended to rally public and Congressional support behind his plan to send 21,500 additional U.S. troops into the Iraqi capital and al-Anbar Province, the heartland of the Sunni insurgency. But his presentation that night was so uninspired, so lacking in conviction, that -- according to media commentary and polling data -- few, if any, Americans were persuaded by his arguments. Only once that evening did Bush visibly come alive: When he spoke about the threat to Iraq supposedly posed by Iran.

"Succeeding in Iraq also requires defending its territorial integrity and stabilizing the region in the face of extremist challenges," he declared, which meant, he assured his audience, addressing the problem of Iran. That country, he asserted, "is providing material support for attacks on American troops." (This support was later identified as advanced improvised explosive devices -- IEDs or roadside bombs -- given to anti-American Shiite militias.) Then followed an unambiguous warning: "We will disrupt the attacks on our forces... And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq."

Consider this item one in his casus belli: Because Iran is aiding and abetting our enemies in Iraq, we are justified in attacking Iran as a matter of self-defense.

Bush put it this way in an interview with Juan Williams of National Public Radio on January 29: "If Iran escalates its military action in Iraq to the detriment of our troops and/or innocent Iraqi people, we will respond firmly ... It makes common sense for the commander-in-chief to say to our troops and the Iraqi people -- and the Iraqi government -- that we will help you defend yourself from people that want to sow discord and harm."

In his January 10 address, the President went on to fill in a second item in any future casus belli: Iran is seeking nuclear weapons in order to dominate the Middle East to the detriment of our friends in the region -- a goal that it simply cannot be allowed to achieve.

In response to such a possibility, the President declared, "We're also taking other steps to bolster the security of Iraq and protect American interests in the Middle East." These included deploying a second U.S. aircraft carrier battle group to the Gulf region, consisting of the USS John C. Stennis and a flotilla of cruisers, destroyers, and submarines (presumably to provide additional air and missile assets for strikes on Iran), along with additional Patriot anti-missile batteries (presumably to shoot down any Iranian missiles that might be fired in retaliation for an air attack on the country and its nuclear facilities). "And," Bush added, "we will work with others to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and dominating the region."

Bush added a third item to the casus belli in his State of the Union Address on January 23. After years of describing Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda as the greatest threats to U.S. interests in the Middle East, he now introduced a new menace: the resurgent Shia branch of Islam led by Iran.

Why Can't We Talk about Peace in Public?

By Matt Taibbi, RollingStone.com. Posted February 28, 2007.

Our national love affair with high-tech weaponry is an inevitable consequence of having a military industrial complex that underwrites our economic structure.

The reason I'm even writing about Spinney's letter this week is that we're now just seeing come into focus the first outlines of the rhetorical parameters for the 2008 presidential campaign. Among other things, I'm seeing a lot of TV commentators pound home the theme that the Democratic party needs to shed its reputation for "pacifism." An article I saw about Rudy Giuliani last week saluted the former mayor for being sensible on Iraq without being a "peacenik." After four years of Iraq, we still can't talk about peace in public! This evil bullshit has been buried in the commercial media's descriptive campaign language seemingly forever by now, but it may be time -- in the wake of this Iraq disaster -- to start thinking about where it comes from and what effect it may have on the national psyche.

I believe that Marine pilot is driven by the same forces that render the presidential candidacy of someone like Dennis Kucinich impossible in America. A country that feeds itself through the manufacture of war technology is bound to view peace, nonviolence and mercy as seditious concepts. It will create policies first and then people to fit its machines, finding wars to fight and creating killers to fight them. If that's true of us, and I think it is, our troubles won't be over even if someone brings the Iraq war to an end. We'll be treating the symptom and not the disease. And the reason our elections are a sham is that the disease is never on the table. Excepting the occasional Kucinich, no one in either party is interested in trying to change who we are, no matter how sick we become.

Iran blames U.S., Israel for world’s problems

so sad but true...

In his lecture Thursday titled “Iran and the World,” the hardline president reiterated arguments that he has made repeatedly throughout the standoff with the United States and its Western allies over Iran’s nuclear activities.

“There is no place in the world that suffers from divisions and wars unless America or the Zionists’ fingerprints are seen there,” Ahmadinejad told his audience in Farsi translated into Arabic.

‘We have to pay attention to the devils’
He urged Muslims to rally behind Iran and accused detractors of Iran’s nuclear program of trying to prevent a developing country from making scientific advances.

“Our strength and the cornerstone of the victory is in our (Muslims’) unity ... we have to pay attention to the devils who want to cause divisions among us,” the Iranian president said.

“They want to keep science in their hands only ... they don’t want the rest of the world to progress,” he said referring Iran’s nuclear program.

Show of solidarity
Ahmadinejad arrived in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, Wednesday in a show of solidarity with Sudan.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir declared support for Iran’s nuclear ambitions while Ahmadinejad said Iran viewed Sudan’s progress as important as its own.

Four Ways to End the Iraq War | Democrats.com

Submitted by Bob Fertik on February 28, 2007 - 12:58pm.ImpeachForChange OutOfIraq

It's been nearly 4 months since the American people voted Democrats into power for one overriding reason: to get U.S. troops out of Iraq.

And after 4 months of closed-door meetings, Democratic leaders in both the Senate and the House have failed to come up with even the beginnings of a plan to deliver what the overwhelming majority of Americans (everyone except FOX News kool-aid drinkers) want.

Why? Because they have run up against a brick wall: George Bush, Dick Cheney, the Republican Party, and the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (a.k.a. Council on National Policy) have absolutely no interest in "changing course."

The Republican plan is simple: to keep U.S. troops in Iraq forever (as Atrios reminds us daily).

Why? Atrios never explains so I will: so U.S. oil companies can control Iraq's massive oil reserves for as long as the world runs on oil. (Dennis Kucinich was right in when he said this to Tim Russert on 2/23/2003, and he's been right ever since.)

If Democrats in Congress - and progressive bloggers - haven't figured this out by now, then they're just plain stupid. All of the pre-war "intelligence" was bald-faced lies that were manufactured simply to justify Bush's war for oil.

Given this harsh reality, what can Congressional Democrats do to get U.S. troops out of Iraq?

1. Cut the Funds. Every single day, Republicans go on TV to dare Democrats to cut funding for the war. Every poll shows the public supports it. So why won't Democrats do it? I have no idea. All I know is that Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats will never do it - period, end of discussion.

2. Impeach Bush and Cheney. In 1973-74, the threat of impeachment caused Richard Nixon to scale back the Vietnam War. If that failed and Democrats had to actually impeach and remove Bush and Cheney (with the help of Republicans who don't want Bush/Cheney in charge during the 2008 election), Democrats would get to vote for their replacements and they could choose an anti-war Democrat (like Al Gore or Russ Feingold) or an anti-war Republican (like Chuck Hagel). So why won't Democrats do it? I have no idea. All I know is that Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats will never do it - period, end of discussion.

3. Filibuster all war funding bills, starting with the $93 billion Supplemental in early March. Russ Feingold could start this filibuster with the support of the handful of Democratic Senators who truly want to end the war: John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Barack Obama, and Ben Cardin. All we need are 40 of the 50 Democrats for the filibuster to succed. With millions marching in the streets and calling Senators from their homes, this is a winnable battle. Write these Senators (personalize if you can):

russ@progressivepatriotsfund.com, info@tedkennedy.com, support@johnkerry.com, media@barackobama.com, info@bencardin.com

Dear Senators,

The only way to end the Iraq War is to cut the funds, starting with the $93 billion Supplemental in March.

I urge all of you to work together to filibuster the Supplemental. You only need 40 votes to sustain the filibuster and force the Bush Administration to change its disastrous course.

Millions of us will do everything we possibly can to support your efforts, including demanding that all Democratic Senators support you - but it's up to you to take the lead.

Sincerely,
[Your name and postal address]

4. Raise taxes on the rich to pay for the war, starting with an amendment to the $93 billion Supplemental in early March. If Democrats don't want to take the blame for cutting funds for Iraq, they can simply force Republicans to cut the funds, simply by adding a tax on the rich to pay for it. Since Republicans will never vote to tax the rich, adding this as an amendment to the Supplemental would guarantee that Republicans defeat the bill - or Bush vetoes it. I proposed this on 12/7/06 and again on 2/7/07. Call your Representative at 202-224-3121 (the Capitol switchboard - ask for your Congressperson) and urge him or her to add a War Tax to the Supplemental.

Update 1: Chris Bowers is struggling to find a way to force conservative Democrats in Congress to support the Murtha plan in the House (impose training and equipment requirements on troops sent to Iraq) and the Biden plan in the Senate (rewrite the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force). Bowers is wasting his time because both the Murtha plan and the Biden plan are a waste of time since Bush has said repeatedly (and Kagro X has blogged repeatedly) that he will ignore any legislation that limits his dictatorial "Commander-in-Chief" powers.

Update 2: Pelosi says she'll push the Murtha plan, but now it's worse than a joke: "The proposal, however, would allow President Bush to waive the rules if he wanted to deploy troops faster or under different standards than allowed by the measure... Current rules allow the Defense Department to waive those conditions. She wants to raise that waiver to a presidential decision."

Ten Reasons to Impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney | Democrats.com

I know I've posted this before but I've decided to repost it every month until they're impeached. Personally, I feel they should also be tried for crimes against humanity...

Ten Reasons to Impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney

I ask Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney for the following reasons:

1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization, and subjecting our military personnel to unnecessary harm, debilitating injuries, and deaths.

2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

3. Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.

4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.

5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.

6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.

7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.

9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.

10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.

Angelina Jolie - Justice for Darfur

I respect her more and more everyday...you go Angie...
Photo from Perez Hilton.com...

By Angelina Jolie
Wednesday, February 28, 2007; Page A19

BAHAI, Chad -- Here, at this refugee camp on the border of Sudan, nothing separates us from Darfur but a small stretch of desert and a line on a map. All the same, it's a line I can't cross. As a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I have traveled into Darfur before, and I had hoped to return. But the UNHCR has told me that this camp, Oure Cassoni, is as close as I can get.

Sticking to this side of the Sudanese border is supposed to keep me safe. By every measure -- killings, rapes, the burning and looting of villages -- the violence in Darfur has increased since my last visit, in 2004. The death toll has passed 200,000; in four years of fighting, Janjaweed militia members have driven 2.5 million people from their homes, including the 26,000 refugees crowded into Oure Cassoni.

Attacks on aid workers are rising, another reason I was told to stay out of Darfur. By drawing attention to their heroic work -- their efforts to keep refugees alive, to keep camps like this one from being consumed by chaos and fear -- I would put them at greater risk.

I've seen how aid workers and nongovernmental organizations make a difference to people struggling for survival. I can see on workers' faces the toll their efforts have taken. Sitting among them, I'm amazed by their bravery and resilience. But humanitarian relief alone will never be enough.

Until the killers and their sponsors are prosecuted and punished, violence will continue on a massive scale. Ending it may well require military action. But accountability can also come from international tribunals, measuring the perpetrators against international standards of justice.

Accountability is a powerful force. It has the potential to change behavior -- to check aggression by those who are used to acting with impunity. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has said that genocide is not a crime of passion; it is a calculated offense. He's right. When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers' calculus will change.

On Monday I asked a group of refugees about their needs. Better tents, said one; better access to medical facilities, said another. Then a teenage boy raised his hand and said, with powerful simplicity, "Nous voulons une épreuve." We want a trial. He is why I am encouraged by the ICC's announcement yesterday that it will prosecute a former Sudanese minister of state and a Janjaweed leader on charges of crimes against humanity.

Some critics of the ICC have said indictments could make the situation worse. The threat of prosecution gives the accused a reason to keep fighting, they argue. Sudanese officials have echoed this argument, saying that the ICC's involvement, and the implication of their own eventual prosecution, is why they have refused to allow U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur.

It is not clear, though, why we should take Khartoum at its word. And the notion that the threat of ICC indictments has somehow exacerbated the problem doesn't make sense, given the history of the conflict. Khartoum's claims aside, would we in America ever accept the logic that we shouldn't prosecute murderers because the threat of prosecution might provoke them to continue killing?

When I was in Chad in June 2004, refugees told me about systematic attacks on their villages. It was estimated then that more than 1,000 people were dying each week.

In October 2004 I visited West Darfur, where I heard horrific stories, including accounts of gang-rapes of mothers and their children. By that time, the UNHCR estimated, 1.6 million people had been displaced in the three provinces of Darfur and 200,000 others had fled to Chad.

It wasn't until June 2005 that the ICC began to investigate. By then the campaign of violence was well underway.

As the prosecutions unfold, I hope the international community will intervene, right away, to protect the people of Darfur and prevent further violence. The refugees don't need more resolutions or statements of concern. They need follow-through on past promises of action.

There has been a groundswell of public support for action. People may disagree on how to intervene -- airstrikes, sending troops, sanctions, divestment -- but we all should agree that the slaughter must be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice.

In my five years with UNHCR, I have visited more than 20 refugee camps in Sierra Leone, Congo, Kosovo and elsewhere. I have met families uprooted by conflict and lobbied governments to help them. Years later, I have found myself at the same camps, hearing the same stories and seeing the same lack of clean water, medicine, security and hope.

It has become clear to me that there will be no enduring peace without justice. History shows that there will be another Darfur, another exodus, in a vicious cycle of bloodshed and retribution. But an international court finally exists. It will be as strong as the support we give it. This might be the moment we stop the cycle of violence and end our tolerance for crimes against humanity.

What the worst people in the world fear most is justice. That's what we should deliver.
