Stem cell team wins 2007 Nobel for medicine

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Mario Capecchi, Martin Evans and Oliver Smithies won the 2007 Nobel prize for medicine or physiology for their work on stem cells, prize awarder the Karolinska Institute said on Monday.

The prestigious 10 million Swedish crown ($1.54 million) prize recognized the international team's work on introducing genetic changes in mice using embryonic stem cells.

Capecchi was born in Italy and is a U.S. citizen. Both Evans and Smithies are British-born. Evans is a Briton while Smithies is a U.S. citizen.

Medicine is traditionally the first of the Nobels awarded each year. The prizes for achievement in science, literature and peace bearing the name of Alfred Nobel were first awarded in 1901 according to the will of the Swedish dynamite millionaire.
