State's first black governor
BOSTON — Deval L. Patrick promised statewide changes yesterday as he took a historic oath to serve as the 71st governor of Massachusetts, the first Democratic governor in 16 years and the second elected black governor in the nation. In an outdoor inauguration that broke with tradition, Patrick vowed to shake up the executive office and to cut excess in cities and towns as several thousand people crowded Beacon Street and spilled into the Boston Common for the ceremony. Pelosi, first female speaker, takes gavel

WASHINGTON — In a day of ceremony and historic change, Rep. Nancy Pelosi became the nation's first female House speaker yesterday as Democrats eagerly took control of Congress for the final two years of President Bush's term.
