Amnesty International USA supports "Water"
Amnesty International USA is proud to announce its support of "Water,"a film directed by the courageous and provocative filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
"Water" is the profoundly moving and compellingly vibrant story of India’s “widow houses,” where women of all ages are taken to live (even today) apart from society following the deaths of their husbands.
Sprinkled with humor, rife with universal emotions and alive with visual excitement, the story of WATER follows three widows who dared to stand up for themselves in the liberating time of Mahatma Gandhi.

About "Water"
The story of WATER begins in 1938 India when an 8 year old girl, who barely even remembers her wedding and has little comprehension of her marriage, has just been widowed. Required by ancient Hindu laws to now leave society, the girl Chuyia is brought to a dilapidated widow house or ashram where, according to custom, her hair will be shorn, her clothes exchanged for white robes and the rest of her life will be spent in renunciation. But the feisty, precocious, disbelieving Chuyia (SARALA) soon turns the house upside down with her rebellious spark. She begins to have a profound effect on the other women who live there, in particular the devout Shakuntula (SEEMA BISWAS) and the beautiful Kalyani (LISA RAY), who has been forced into prostitution by the domineering head widow, Madhumati (MANORMA).
It is Chuyia who leads Kalyani to meet the alluring law student and Gandhi nationalist Narayan (JOHN ABRAHAM), with whom Kalyani falls in love, despite the taboos. What happens next – an attempt at escape fueled by passion and bravery -- will change Chuyia forever and bring both tragedy and an unexpected ray of hope to the widow house.

Antidepressants Fail To Cure Depression...
Antidepressants fail to cure the symptoms of major depression in half of all patients with the disease even if they receive the best possible care, according to a definitive government study released yesterday.
Significant numbers of patients continue to experience symptoms such as sadness, low energy and hopelessness after intensive treatment, even as about an equal number report an end to such problems -- a result that quickly lent itself to interpretations that the glass was either half empty or half full.

My response...
I so agree with this post and many others too. Whatever helps you to cope (as
long as it isn't addictive, and then takes over your life). *In my humble
opinion, and through much experience I know anti-depressants don't work as most
people want them to. Anti-depressants should be prescribed as an aide to help
alleviate the symptoms of depression, not cure it. Unfortunately, most people
believe what they hear and see on TV advertisements paid for by very wealthy
pharmaceutical companies that want you to give them more money.I know that alot
of things help me through bouts of chronic major depressive episodes.
Anti-depressants help, but so does the support of friends and family, the
professinal care from a good therapist and psychiatrist, support groups, God,
writing, etc...Good luck to all those who suffer and need to remember that this
too shall pass.

Jack Carter-A return to America's Values
This is not a conflict between liberals and conservatives or even between Democrats and Republicans. The unprecedented changes in policy are from those of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, and also, of course, from those of Democratic presidents.
These changes involve the most basic aspects of America's moral values: peace, human rights, justice, the environment, fiscal responsibility, respects for the civil rights of Americans, the honoring of international commitments, separation of church and state, and the control of nuclear weapons.

Dear God...
Dear God
Lyric by:
Andy Partridge
Dear God,
hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you
Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too!
Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
so do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in
I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in
it's you... Dear God.

I feel like going back in time...remember the rock group Yes?
When I was growing up in the 70's Yes was pretty popular. They were one of my favorite bands and creators of my favorite album, Fragile. It was the '70's...and, I thought my life was hard then. I feel so bad for my 14 year-old son, everything is so much worse for kids than they were back then.Checkout the song Roundabout...
Yes Fragile:
1. Roundabout - Yes
2. Cans And Brahms - Yes
3. We Have Heaven - Yes
4. South Side Of The Sky - Yes
5. Five Per Cent For Nothing - Yes
6. Long Distance Runaround - Yes
7. The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) - Yes
8. Mood For A Day - Yes
9. Heart Of The Sunrise - Yes

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS"If we speak the truth, they will try to silence us. If we act, they will to try to stop us. But we speak for the majority, here and around the world, and as we get this going we are going to reach out to the people who have been so badly fooled by Bush and we are NOT going to stop."
-- from the Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime
At a time when the Bush regime spies on anyone it wants, passes repressive laws like the Patriot Act, when rounds up immigrants in the dead of night, and clamps down on dissent, it is important for those organizing to drive out this regime to know our rights and not allow fear to silence us. The Mental Strain of War
As former VA Secretary Anthony Principi has said, the Iraq's war's guerilla fighting and prolonged tours are having a profound effect on the mental health of the vets coming home.
35% of Iraq veterans have already sought mental health services.
Almost 20% of Iraq veterans report a mental health problem, while 11% of Afghanistan veterans report a problem.
These numbers have been growing steadily as new waves of veterans return, and as veterans cope with multiple tours in theatre. As early as July 2004, a New England Journal of Medicine study concluded that 15 to 17% of Iraq veterans suffer from major depression, generalized anxiety, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The President's Popularity
So are George W. Bush's approval figures.
In an administration marked by chilling numbers, from deficits to demonstrations, the Bush administration this week posted the most jaw-dropping figure of all:
Thirty-four.
According to the latest CBS News polling, only 34 percent of Americans now approve of the job the president is doing, with 59 percent of those surveyed disapproving.
U.S. Troops in Iraq: 72% Say End War in 2006
Released: February 28, 2006
Le Moyne College/Zogby Poll
- shows just one in five troops want to heed Bush call to stay “as long as they are needed”
- While 58% say mission is clear, 42% say U.S. role is hazy
- Plurality believes Iraqi insurgents are mostly homegrown
- Almost 90% think war is retaliation for Saddam’s role in 9/11,
most don’t blame Iraqi public for insurgent attacks - Majority of troops oppose use of harsh prisoner interrogation
- Plurality of troops pleased with their armor and equipment
An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and more than one in four say the troops should leave immediately, a new Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey shows.
