Darfur Peace Agreement on the Verge of Collapse


Sudan’s Darfur Peace Agreement is on the verge of collapse, a top UN envoy
warned on Thursday, one day after the African Union Peace and Security Council
voted to remain in Darfur to prevent a security vacuum in the war-torn region.
UN Special Representative to the Secretary General Jan Pronk said the
signing of the May 5 Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) by the Sudanese government and one faction of the rebel Sudan Liberation Army, has only plunged the
region further into anarchy.

“The DPA is in a coma,” Pronk told reporters in Khartoum, echoing remarks he made to the UN Security Council yesterday. “It is nearly dead. This is cause for great concern.”

Pronk lambasted the Darfur Ceasefire Commission (CFC), which is responsible for implementing and monitoring the DPA.

The Commission is composed of members of the Sudanese government and signatories to the DPA.
