No Accountability, No Shame
the hallmarks of Bush's foreign policy.
By Tom Engelhardt
August 26, 2005
Extraordinary renditions, torture, abuse, humiliation, detention without charge or end, an obsession with protecting American officials (and military men) from future foreign or domestic criminal charges for their acts -- these are the cornerstones of foreign policy under George Bush, and they have produced horror stories galore. His is a presidency that has made the beautiful speech about the spreading of freedom and human rights just the sunny-side up version of the infliction of pain, the double standard, and the detention center.

Is Iraq Vietnam on Crack Cocaine?
Commentary: The hawks and neocons who first started us off in Iraq have essentially created their own worst nightmare.

In the Garden of ArmageddonThey were Iraq's only real WMDs. The U.S. refused to secure them. Now Saddam's nuclear and bioweapons scientists are dispersed and more dangerous than ever.
On the April day in 2003 when American troops first entered Baghdad, historian Marilyn Young suggested that Operation Iraqi Freedom was "Vietnam on crack cocaine." She wrote presciently at the time:
"In less then two weeks a 30 year old vocabulary is back: credibility gap, seek and destroy, hard to tell friend from foe, civilian interference in military affairs, the dominance of domestic politics, winning, or more often, losing hearts and minds."

Former aide: Powell WMD speech 'lowest point in my life'
Programming Note:
" 'Dead Wrong' -- Inside an Intelligence Meltdown" airs Sunday at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET on CNN.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell presents the case that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction in 2003.
(CNN) -- A former top aide to Colin Powell says his involvement in the former secretary of state's presentation to the United Nations on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction was "the lowest point" in his life.
"I wish I had not been involved in it," says Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a longtime Powell adviser who served as his chief of staff from 2002 through 2005. "I look back on it, and I still say it was the lowest point in my life."
Wilkerson is one of several insiders interviewed for the CNN Presents documentary "Dead Wrong -- Inside an Intelligence Meltdown." The program, which airs Sunday at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET, pieces together the events leading up to the mistaken WMD intelligence that was presented to the public. A presidential commission that investigated the pre-war WMD intelligence found much of it to be "dead wrong."

Retired four-star Army General Barry McCaffrey to Time Magazine: "The Army's wheels are going to come off in the next 24 months. We are now in a period of considerable strategic peril. It's because Rumsfeld has dug in his heels and said, I cannot retreat from my position."

The Toronto Globe and Mail reports that so far Bush has been able to avoid driving past the protesting Cindy Sheehan - and her media coterie by helicoptering in and out of his Crawford, Texas ranch. But today he plans to attend a $2 million RNC fundraiser at a ranch right next door. Using the chopper seems a bit excessive for that short of a trip. Maybe he'll just take the dirt bike.

Thich Nhat Hanh Helps Us Overcome Fear
Adapted from True Love, by Thich Nhat Hanh (Shambhala 2004).
“We have great fear inside ourselves. We are afraid of everything--of our death, of being alone, of change. Fear is born from our concepts regarding life, death, being, and nonbeing. If we are able to get rid of all these concepts by touching the reality within ourselves, then nonfear will be there and the greatest relief will become possible.”

WHAT ELSE DID THE BASTARDS LIE ABOUT?
The government lied to us all. The mainstream media helped them do it. So did Israel. Yes, all those necessary hundreds of people needed to promote the lie did all conspire to do exactly that. That is a fact, and it is time to accept it.

Human rights can't be abandoned

LET the Home Secretary expel foreign nationals whose presence is not conducive to the public good. Asylum-seekers who use our soil as a platform to preach hatred should be turned away. Fast-tracking extradition in a manner consistent with due process is fine. Improving border security seemed sensible a long time ago. All this the Prime Minister now proposes.
BOMBINGS AT HIROSHIMA, NAGASAKI: 60 years later, many wonder -- were atomic blasts necessary?
August 5, 2005
"Of course, America used a huge amount of money to build the nuclear bomb, so they thought they should use it," said Hataguchi, director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. He was born shortly after Aug. 6, 1945, when the devastating bomb was dropped.
Al-Qa'ida deputy warns of more bombings and blames Blair
Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's deputy, insisted that the London suicide bombings were the direct result of the Prime Minister's decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq. The statement, in a videotape broadcast by the Arab satellite channel al-Jazeera, was the first message from al-Qa'ida since the London blasts.
It came on a day that London had braced itself for more possible bombings, with 6,000 police patrolling the streets and transport system. The first person to be charged over the bombings, Ishmael Abdurahman, also appeared in court in London.
Zawahiri, speaking with a Kalashnikov next to him, said: "Blair's policies brought you destruction in central London and will bring you more destruction, God willing." He went on to promise attacks on Americans " that will make you forget the horrors you have seen in Vietnam".

Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University says one day robots could fool us into believing they are human.
