Today's Cartoon: Expectations Drop with the Economy
The U.S. Census Bureau yesterday reported that 12.5 percent of Americans—one in eight—were living in poverty in 2007. 10.9 percent of working-age adults (between the ages of 16 and 64) were poor, compared with 9.6 percent in 2000.

Hello
Joe Biden's introductory email and video received yesterday
Pamela --
I'd like to thank you for the warm welcome I've received as the newest member of this campaign.
What you and Barack have accomplished over the past 19 months is incredible, and it's an honor to be part of it. I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting involved.
I recorded a short video message about how I hope to help in the weeks ahead.
Please take a minute to watch the video and share it with your friends:Over the next few weeks, I'll be doing a lot of the things you've done to grow this movement -- reaching out day after day in neighborhoods all across the country, connecting with people who are hungry for the change we need.
This is no ordinary time, and this is no ordinary election. I plan to do everything I can to help Barack take back the White House.
I don't need to tell you that John McCain will just bring us another four years of the same. You can't change America when you supported George Bush's policies 95% of the time.
Barack has the vision and the courage to bring real change to Washington. But even he can't do this alone.
Join me by getting involved in your community -- and reach out to your friends and family to get them involved as well.
Please watch this video and pass it on:
http://my.barackobama.com/bidenvideoThank you,
Joe

Caught red handed
Note: This lock up was created for the DEMOCRAT convention.
You know, the WE ARE CHANGE people.
Three cheers for local reporter Rick Sallinger and local Denver Channel 4 for catching this atrocity in the making before the fact.
Notes:
Denver officials weren't planning to reveal details about where activists would be detained in the event of mass arrests during the Democratic National Convention until after the event had started, but those plans were quickly dashed this week when CBS 4News reporter Rick Sallinger not only revealed that protesters would be locked up in a city-owned warehouse, but he also obtained clear video footage inside the facility, a building that includes barbed wire-topped cages and signs warning of stun-gun use.

The Next Vice President
Hey, this is akin to waking up on Christmas morning and opening up the best present first. I like Joe Biden. I liked him during the Presidential debates. Good choice Senator Obama!
Pamela --
I have some important news that I want to make official.
I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.
Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.
I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.
Please let Joe know that you're glad he's part of our team. Share your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it:
http://my.barackobama.com/welcomejoe
Thanks for your support,
Barack

The REAL John McCain: Less Jobs, More Wars.
McCain's Mansions
Click here to spread this to everyone you know
Help spread the word about McCain:
- Email this video to everyone you know and encourage them to send it on.
- Add the video to your Facebook, MySpace, or MyBO page.
Update 8/21/08: John McCain doesn't even know how many houses he owns.
Update 8/19/08: McCain's Mansions featured in the New York Times and the Washington Post.John McCain is soaring to new heights of hypocrisy on his wife's personal jet. He flies around the country bent on duping the public into believing he's "one of them," a regular guy who can empathize with Americans facing an overwhelming economic crush. What's more, he disparages those who oppose his ridiculous policy proposals as "elitist." But who's the real elitist?
The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain.
Together, you have been a force in making sure The REAL McCain videos have been seen by nearly 6.5 million people. But as Frank Rich noted in his NY Times column yesterday, 40% of Americans hear too little about McCain from the mainstream media, meaning "the public doesn't know who on earth John McCain is." That's why it's crucial you ensure this video is seen by as many as possible, and that we use each and every tool at our disposal to get the word out. Send this on to five friends and family members, and tell them to send it to five people they know. Get it to your local news outlets and blogs and networking sites like Digg. Raise hell about McCain's economic duplicity!
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney summed it up best when he said McCain "simply doesn't understand the challenges America's working families are facing because he isn't remotely affected by them." It's up to us to tell people who McCain really is, a personal jet-setting elitist more concerned with corporate lobbyists than hard-working Americans.

Hemp: The outlawed plant
Demon Marijuana
Grown worldwide for millenia as a source of food, medicine, fiber and paper, hemp was banned for the first time in human history in 1938 by the United States.
The original impetus for outlawing the hemp plant came from the DuPont and Mellon families with an important assist from William Randolf Hearst.
Hearst owned timber rights for millions of acres of forest land, the raw material for newsprint. DuPont had patents for numerous synthetic products that hemp is competitive with.
Harry Anslinger, the virulent racist who headed the Bureau of Narcotics and spear-headed the campaign against "demon marijuana" was married to the niece of Richard Mellon of the Mellon banking family.
For those who believe that the world is run by and for the benefit of a few interlocking families, this episode provides evidence for that position.
Enforcing marijuana laws and jailing offenders is a multi-billion dollar a year business that employs tens of thousands of people.

Watch new video on the human cost of marijuana prohibition
If you only watch one video from the Marijuana Policy Project in your lifetime, let it be this one.
Part 1...
Part 2...
This new documentary from MPP is about the human costs of that war, told by those who have been caught in the crossfire: people like Bernie Ellis, who is fighting to keep the farm he has loved for 40 years after giving medical marijuana to terminal cancer patients ... people like the Naulls family, whose children and property were seized by law enforcement officers even though, as medical marijuana dispensary operators, they had broken no state laws ... and people like Marisa Garcia, who lost her student financial aid because of an arrest for a minor marijuana violation.
And then there are those like Jonathan Magbie, a quadriplegic who died in jail as a result of inadequate medical care after being convicted of possessing a small amount of marijuana, who will never be able to tell their stories.
Every week, we at the Marijuana Policy Project confront extreme government abuses like these, as the war on marijuana users rages on, with the government arresting law-abiding citizens, seizing their property, locking them up for decades, and even killing them.
With the help of our 25,000 dues-paying members, MPP is working to end the persecution and destruction of people just like you. You can help us bring sense to our nation's marijuana policies by making a financial contribution to our work.
Your help is desperately needed. In the time it takes you to watch this video, 28 more Americans will be arrested for marijuana.
We can end our government's cruel war on its own citizens — but we must stand and fight.
Sincerely,
Rob Kampia
Executive Director
Marijuana Policy Project

Russia, Georgia and the US
What really happened in Georgia?
Some basic facts:
1. The citizens of South Ossetia have long expressed a desire to break away from Georgia and, in fact, declared themselves independent from Georgia in the 1990s.
2. On the first day of the 2008 Olympics, Georgia launched an all-out, "shock and awe" attack on numerous civilian targets in Tskhinvali, the capital city of South Ossetia
3. Russia, which shares a border and a long historical connection with South Ossetia, sent troops into the region to fight back the attacking Georgian military.
4. The arms for Georgia's attack on South Ossetia were largely provided by the US.
5. The US and UK news media have successfully managed to portray these events as a random, unprovoked and savage attack on Georgia by Russia.
In this video, Mikhail Gorbachev responds.

VOA News - US Warns Russia To Halt 'Invasion' Of Georgia: "Bos report - Download (MP3)
Bos report - Listen (MP3)
United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has condemned Russian military operations in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, saying the action reminds her of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. She spoke in Georgia where the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili declared that his country would never surrender despite Moscow's military might. Stefan Bos reports for VOA from the Georgian town of Zestaponi, which is feeling the impact of ongoing fighting."

Promote Human Rights in China
President Bush recently announced that he would be attending the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. We are urging him to pressure China for human rights improvements before the Games. Despite promises to improve its human rights record, China has become increasingly repressive in the run up to the Olympics. Human rights activists are detained without trial, journalists are harassed and imprisoned, “re-education through labor” programs continue unabated and China remains the world’s leading executioner.
