The 25 Worst Web Sites
1. MySpace.com
Yes, we know. With more than 90 million users, MySpace is now more popular than Elvis, "American Idol," and ice cream. But the Web's most visited destination is also its most poorly designed and counterproductive.
The ease with which anyone of any age can create a page, upload photos, share deeply personal details of their lives, and make new "friends" quickly turned MySpace into a one-stop shopping mall for online predators. That in turn has made the site an easy target for politicians who pander for votes by playing on parental fears. In an era when the basic tenets of the Net are under attack by both Ma Bell and Uncle Sam, MySpace is a headache we don't need.
But let's put all that aside for a moment. Graphically, many MySpace pages look like a teenager's bedroom after a tornado--a swirl of clashing backgrounds, boxes stacked inside other boxes, massive photos, and sonic disturbance. Try loading a few of those pages at once and watch what happens to your CPU. Watch out for spyware, too, since it turns out that MySpace has become a popular distribution vector for drive-by downloads and other exploits. And in a place where "U are soooooooo hot!!!" passes for wit, MySpace isn't doing much to elevate the level of social discourse.
In response to a public backlash and some well-publicized lawsuits, MySpace has begun modifying its policies--for example, limiting adults' ability to contact minors. That's hardly enough. Requiring some kind of authentication from MySpacers--or their parents--to validate their ages and identities would go a long way toward scaring off the creeps and making the site a kinder, gentler social network.
Is MySpace totally bad? Not at all. Are we old farts? Yeah, probably. But the Web's most popular site needs a serious security reboot. And probably a makeover. Until then, MySpace won't ever be OurSpace.

Worst Disaster
Claim: Television news screen shot captures President Bush with an inadvertentlyhumorous caption.
Status: True.
Examples: [Collected on the Internet, 2005]
Origins: Captions accompanying television news broadcasts have to convey information about often complex topics in relatively few words, a situation which can sometimes produce inadvertently humorous ambiguity. The screen shot displayed above, presumably captured from a Sky News (Ireland) broadcast, uses a text caption in conjunction with a video clip of President Bush to convey that the President had declared Hurricane Katrina to be "one of the worst disasters to hit the U.S." Without the video context however, the caption could be read as labeling President Bush "one of the worst disasters ever to hit the U.S.," especially given the lack of quotation marks to offset the phrase and indicate it was a paraphrase of his words rather than the news agency's descriptor.

"Murdering Children - Israel's Domestic Policy"
In the past 8 weeks alone, the Zionist government of Israel and its
military aparatus have murdered 228 Palestinians, 37 of them children. Almost
all of these children's names have been completely excluded from Western media
reports, while almost everyone knows the name of the single Israeli soldier
whose capture led Israel to attack Lebanon and murder 1300 civilians.

An Important Action Alert from ActForChange.com
Tell the Media -- Cover Rep. Conyers' Report on Extensive Presidential
LawbreakingContributed by Working Assets
The minority staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Congressman John Conyers (D., Mich.) just released the final version of a staggering report that includes evidence of extensive crimes and abuses committed by President Bush and his administration.
This report, "The Constitution in Crisis," details 26 specific laws broken by the Bush Administration -- and could potentially provide the raw material for numerous news stories and point reporters toward fertile ground for additional investigations. After all, you would think that a report from the ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee alleging such widespread lawbreaking would be quite newsworthy -- and deserve follow-up stories by investigative reporters.
However, the release of Rep. Conyers' report has been met with deafening silence by the national media conglomerates. Not a single national news network or major paper has seen fit to cover the release of Representative Conyers' report.
So let's remind the media that they need to do their jobs and report ALL the news -- even if it's not to the Administration's liking.
Call to action:
Tell ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times
and National Public Radio to cover the release of the Conyers Report.

Darfur Peace Agreement on the Verge of Collapse
Sudan’s Darfur Peace Agreement is on the verge of collapse, a top UN envoy
warned on Thursday, one day after the African Union Peace and Security Council
voted to remain in Darfur to prevent a security vacuum in the war-torn region.
UN Special Representative to the Secretary General Jan Pronk said the
signing of the May 5 Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) by the Sudanese government and one faction of the rebel Sudan Liberation Army, has only plunged the
region further into anarchy.“The DPA is in a coma,” Pronk told reporters in Khartoum, echoing remarks he made to the UN Security Council yesterday. “It is nearly dead. This is cause for great concern.”
Pronk lambasted the Darfur Ceasefire Commission (CFC), which is responsible for implementing and monitoring the DPA.
The Commission is composed of members of the Sudanese government and signatories to the DPA.

"Ten Steps to a Liberal America"
Bill Scher has been writing smart, sharp political commentary on his popular blog, Liberal Oasis, for several years. Now, he's got a bold, pragmatic plan to revitalize liberal politics in America. His book contains plenty of practical advice on how to:- defuse the right-wing culture war
- communicate directly with the news media and encourage them to cover underreported stories
- protest in a way that reaches those outside the ranks of activist organizations
- join the growing online liberal community to effectively exert pressure on the political establishment
- embrace the term liberal as often and as openly as possible
Come prepared with lots of questions! We'll have a question and answer session after Bill's reading.

Deval Patrick Wins It!
I love voting. I feel that it's not only my duty to vote but, I feel privileged to do so. I love it even more that the Democrats are running strong again and my choice for Governor, Deval Patrick won overwhelmingly tonight.
Deval L. Patrick, who rose from poverty on the South Side of Chicago to
corporate boardrooms and a top position in President Clinton's administration,
won the Democratic Party's nomination for governor tonight, becoming the first African American to win a major party's nomination for the top job in the state.
Patrick easily won a three-way primary over two better-known rivals, Christopher F. Gabrieli and Thomas F. Reilly.
Reilly appeared before supporters at about 9:45 p.m. to congratulate Patrick for running an "outstanding campaign" and pledged to support Patrick. "We gave it everything we had. it just didnt work out for us,'' Reilly said.
A political unknown when his interest in the job became public in January 2005, Patrick captured the interest first of Democratic activists, winning the party caucuses in February of this year and then capturing the endorsement of the party convention in June.
Patrick now faces a tough, seven-week campaign that the state's Democratic leadership hopes will return the governor's office to the party's control for the first time since 1990. He will battle Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, who was unopposed for the Republican nomination, independent Christy Mihos, and Green Rainbow Party nominee Grace Ross.
The vote today ended the most expensive primary gubernatorial campaign in the state history, with the campaigns spending more than $15 million in television ads. Gabrieli, a wealthy venture capitalist who used more than $10 million of his personal funds for his campaign, spent $8 million on television advertising.
But a key factor in Patrick's victory appears to have been the field organization that he and his staff built, which drew heavily on the Internet. The strategy helped to deliver Patrick voters to the poll yesteday. But the campaign also was able to raise more than $1 million from its website.

Vote for Deval Patrick

Evaluation of Deval Patrick & The Deval Patrick Campaign
The following evaluation is based on discussions with Deval Patrick and his senior campaign staff as well as a review of the campaign's website and the texts of Patrick's speeches. Quotes from 6 recent speeches delivered in 2005 are footnoted as follows:
August 3: Speech marking 40th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, State House
June 4: Speech to 21st Century Black Massachusetts
May 22: Commencement Address at Boston University Law School
May 14: Speech to the Massachusetts Democratic Convention
April 30: Keynote Address to the Cape Cod & Islands Annual Dinner
April 16: Speech to Young Democrats of Massachusetts
The other Patrick quotes are taken from his statements at an August 19, 2005 meeting with 4 SCC members.
1. Does the candidate support the basic tenets and spirit of the Democratic Party platform - especially on critical, in-play issues?
For our August 19th meeting with Deval Patrick, we selected four topics that reflect key components of the Democratic Party Platform as the focus for our questions to the candidate: Health Care, Education, Economic Growth & Jobs / Taxes and Public Services, and Labor.
Health Care
"Single payer is my medium-term destination. Where I want to go is single payer." Of of the proposals now out there, he is currently supportive of Health Care for All, with some modifications. On the way to our destination, ". . . we have to do what we can do now. It's immoral to have this number of people [1/2 a million] who go to bed every night worried about getting sick. It's hard to ask these people [the uninsured and the underinsured] to wait for the stars to be aligned for Single Payer. Health Care for All is the most attractive and ambitious proposal that we can do right now . . . but where I want to go is single payer."
He spoke of the problem of multiple meanings of Single Payer – ranging from a single clearinghouse for bill paying to a government-managed delivery system. His focus will be on inclusiveness, transportability, simplicity, quality and real cost savings (e.g. cutting the 30% administrative costs of the current system).
"A politics of hope means universal health care in our state. This is a unique moment in time. No one is happy with the current system - not employers, not doctors, not the hospitals, certainly not the uninsured and underinsured. Even if you have health insurance, you know how hard it is to get to the care you need. If no one is happy with the current system, why don't we change it? It's not going to be easy. It's going to take hard work and vision. It's going to take bold and creative leadership and it's going to take a governor not afraid to take on some political risk."[6]
Education
"We need to take a comprehensive approach – from early childhood developmentthrough university."
He spoke about the need to stop the fiscal shell game of funding through the regressive property tax and the need for the state to increase its financial contribution and restore an appropriate balance between state and local funding. He declared "it is a scandal that Massachusetts ranks 47th in U.S.spending on public higher education." He sees his role as one of making an effective case as to why it's in the best interest of the Commonwealth to undertake these changes.
However, he said, "it's not just about funding. Much of the problem is due to the lack of collaboration among and between the many programs that currently exist. There are good things happening now, but it's very fragmented. We have to create the environment for innovation and collaboration.
"Between 1985 and 2000, state spending on higher education grew 16 percent, while spending on prisons went up 273 percent. ... Common sense has been drained out of a lot of our public policy, and we ought to start putting it back. Our kids need to get educated, get a job and get involved. ... We needmore than what has been called education reform in Massachusetts. We need an education renaissance. We need broader access to early childhood development, all-day kindergarten, smaller class sizes, a longer school day, after school enrichment programs, consistently safe schools, teachers who are trained to be accountable as professionals. And we need to start acting like a good education is about the whole child, not just passing the MCAS. We spend at the level of 47th in the nation now on public higher education ... We have been walking away from public education at all levels in this state. At the very moment in history that education, especially at the level of college-level certificate, is becoming the key to entry into the new economy."[2]
"A politics of hope means not just education reform, but an education renaissance. From pre-k through public colleges and universities, we need a dramatic reevaluation of our educational system. Everything has to be on the table. The school calendar, the school day, the school curriculum, after school programs, class size, training and paying teachers like the professionals they are, strengthening public higher education, too - we need to have a serious and committed discussion on how we educate our children in this state. And we need to set an ambitious goal. There is no reason why we cannot have the best public school system in the country."[6]
"[Government should provide or support] consistent excellence in the public schools, with adequate funding, comprehensive strategies and higher expectations for the whole system, not just the kids. ... an economy that is growing, where it is easy to get trained and to get experience, . . ."[2]

"How much less are you making?"
"Did You Hear the One About Hitler?"

Did You Hear the One About Hitler?
A new book about humor under the Nazis gives some interesting insights into life in the Third Reich and breaks yet another taboo in Germany's treatment of its history. Jokes told during the era, says the author, provided the populace with a pressure release.
"Hitler visits a lunatic asylum. The patients give the Hitler salute. As he
passes down the line he comes across a man who isn't saluting. "Why aren't you
saluting like the others?" Hitler barks. "Mein Führer, I'm the nurse, I'm not
crazy!" comes the answer."
The author, German film director and screenplay writer Rudolph Herzog, isn't trying to make readers laugh. He wants to examine the Nazi period from a different perspective, and sees contemporary jokes as a good way of showing people's true feelings at the time.
"Jokes reflect what really affects, amuses and angers people. They provide an inner view of the Third Reich that possesses an authenticity one usually misses when reviewing other literary texts," says Herzog, 33, whose book "Heil Hitler, The Pig is Dead" -- the punchline to another Hitler joke -- goes on sale in September. "Political jokes weren't a form of active resistance but valves for pent-up public anger. They were told in pubs, on the street -- to let off steam with a laugh. This suited the Nazi regime which was deeply humorless."

A LIFE-long friend of Steve Irwin today told how the Crocodile Hunter pulled a deadly stingray barb from his own chest before losing consciousness and dying.
Friend John Stainton said he had viewed footage of his friend's last moments and the images were "shocking".
"It's a very hard thing to watch because you're actually witnessing somebody die ... and it's terrible," he said.
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.
"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down."
