Cindy Sheehan calls Bush a 'terrorist'

" 'By his own definition, he is a terrorist,' said Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq, who gained notoriety for setting up a protest camp outside the US president's Texas ranch last year.
'George W. Bush is responsible for killing tens of thousands of innocent people and his definition of a terrorist is someone who kills innocent women, men and children,' she told other invited guests at the live broadcast of President Hugo Chavez's weekly program.
Sheehan called for the impeachment of Bush whom she accused of 'war crimes.' "

Most Americans want Bush to reveal lobbyist ties: poll

Politics News Article Reuters.com:

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three in four Americans want President George W. Bush to disclose his aides' links with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a demand the White House has rejected so far, according to a poll published on Saturday.
The Washington Post said the demand was supported by clear majorities of both Republicans and Democrats in the Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted between January 23 and January 26.
Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud charges this month and agreed to help U.S. prosecutors in a corruption probe that has sparked calls for reform of the Washington practice of lobbying lawmakers with donations and favors to influence legislation.
At a White House news conference on Thursday, Bush said he did not know Abramoff and would not release photographs in which the two appeared together.
He said the release of the photographs would be used for 'pure political purposes' by Democrats.
The Washington Post said 76 percent of those surveyed said Bush should release lists of all meetings between his aides and Abramoff. Eighteen percent disagreed.
'Two in three Republicans joined with eight in 10 Democrats and political independents in favoring disclosure,' the paper said.
It said 1,002 people were interviewed and the poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Tell the Supreme Court To Protect Victim Rights

This spring, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that will have profound implications on the prosecution of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse, child abuse and child sexual assault cases. Hammon v. Indiana focuses on admitting victim comments into evidence when the victim is not actually in court to testify or be cross-examined. Stop Family Violence needs your stories for a legal brief that will help the Supreme Court understand why victims of violence may not want to testify against their abuser in criminal court.
Your story can help the court understand the needs and concerns of victims and the crucial role of evidence-based victimless prosecution. (you can tell your story anonymously)
Stop Family Violence will publish your story on our website and will submit it for inclusion in a legal brief that will be sent to the Supreme Court for consideration in the Hammon v. Indiana case. Stop Family Violence thanks the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project, the National Network to End Domestic Violence and Legal Momentum for co-authoring the legal brief. Urge Congress to Renew and Restore the Voting Rights Act

The Voting Rights Act, passed over 40 years ago in 1965, is most successful piece of civil rights legislation in history. Unfortunately, unless Congress votes to renew several key sections of the law, they will expire by 2007.
Congress began hearings on renewal legislation on October 18, so we need your help now to make sure that all of the expiring provisions are renewed and restored and to prevent opponents of the VRA from sabotaging the reauthorization.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate's top Republican decided Thursday to force a showdown on Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito early next week, with the Democratic senators from Massachusetts pushing to block the vote.

Not In Our Name
Statement of Conscience
Updated January 18, 2005
As George W. Bush is inaugurated for a second term, let it not be said that people in the United States silently acquiesced in the face of this shameful coronation of war, greed, and intolerance. He does not speak for us. He does not represent us. He does not act in our name.
No election, whether fair or fraudulent, can legitimize criminal wars on foreign countries, torture, the wholesale violation of human rights, and the end of science and reason.
In our name, the Bush government justifies the invasion and occupation of Iraq on false pretenses, raining down destruction, horror, and misery, bringing death to more than 100,000 Iraqis. It sends our youth to destroy entire cities for the sake of so-called democratic elections, while intimidating and disenfranchising thousands of African American and other voters at home.
In our name, the Bush government holds in contempt international law and world opinion. It carries out torture and detentions without trial around the world and proposes new assaults on our rights of privacy, speech and assembly at home. It strips the rights of Arabs, Muslims and South Asians in the U.S., denies them legal counsel, stigmatizes and holds them without cause.

U.S. 'Outsourced' Torture

By JAN SLIVA,

STRASBOURG, France - The head of a European investigation into alleged CIA secret prisons in Europe said Tuesday that evidence pointed to the existence of a system of "outsourcing" of torture by the United States, and that it was highly likely European governments were aware of it.

Nonviolent Resistance
By Max Obuszewski
Some twenty antiwar activists held a demonstration on a rainy Wednesday morning outside U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia at 3rd & Constitution Ave. The demonstration preceded the third trial resulting from more than 370 arrests at the White House on September 26, 2005, when activists gathered to seek a meeting to discuss an end to the war in Iraq.
The National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR] and United For Peace & Justice organized the largest mass action in U.S. Park Police history, and around thirty of the arrestees appeared January 18 in federal court. Several of them had their charges dismissed, three arrestees paid the fine and one defendant was granted a continuance.
Court observers who attended the first two trials sensed a different climate in Judge Deborah Robinsons courtroom. In contrast to the other judges, she did not want to treat this case as a criminal matter and suggested that those arrested not be called defendants. Both Angela George, the prosecutor, and Mark Goldstone, the attorney advisor, opposed this concept. Mark was concerned that certain rights inherent in a criminal case would be lost. So we did witness the beginning of a criminal trial."

War Against War: Uncomfortably Numb

A slide video presentation made possible by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by First Amendment advocate, Russ Kick, and made available on his web site www.thememoryhole.org.
A Pentagon ban, supported by the Bush Administration forbids the taking of pictures of dead soldiers -- the practice of which many believe changed America's course in Vietnam. To date, over 700 Americans have been killed in Iraq since George W. Bush declared war, but the practice of only counting Americans is perhaps the most troubling of all.

ACLU Calls on Americans to Tell the White House to Stop Illegal Spying

ACLU Calls for a Special Counsel: Add Your Voice

NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union today ran a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post criticizing the president for authorizing the National Security Agency to engage in illegal surveillance of Americans.
The ad invokes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights pioneer who was an innocent victim of illegal government wiretapping and draws the correlation between abuse of government power and illegal warrantless wiretapping authorized by President Bush.
'It has never been acceptable for the government to spy on Americans without having to go to court and present evidence as to why the individual is under suspicion. It was unacceptable when they spied on Martin Luther King and it is unacceptable today,' said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "This fundamental tenet of American democracy has been blatantly violated by President Bush and he must be held accountable. No one, most importantly our elected leader, is above the law.”

The Full Text Of Al Gore's Speech...

Congressman Barr and I have disagreed many times over the years, but we have joined together today with thousands of our fellow citizens—Democrats and Republicans alike—to express our shared concern that America’s Constitution is in grave danger.
In spite of our differences over ideology and politics, we are in strong agreement that the American values we hold most dear have been placed at serious risk by the unprecedented claims of the Administration to a truly breathtaking expansion of executive power.
As we begin this new year, the Executive Branch of our government has been caught eavesdropping on huge numbers of American citizens and has brazenly declared that it has the unilateral right to continue without regard to the established law enacted by Congress to prevent such abuses.
It is imperative that respect for the rule of law be restored.
So, many of us have come here to Constitution Hall to sound an alarm and call upon our fellow citizens to put aside partisan differences and join with us in demanding that our Constitution be defended and preserved.
It is appropriate that we make this appeal on the day our nation has set aside to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who challenged America to breathe new life into our oldest values by extending its promise to all our people.

Where is America headed? It's not hard to find pessimists. Author and former Nixon adviser Kevin Phillips believes the nation is dominated by a new, plutocracy, in which wealth reaches, beyond its own realm, to control government at all levels. The writer Robert Kaplan predicts that our society could soon, resemble the oligarchies of ancient Athens and Sparta. Sociologist Bertram Gross has predicted a friendly fascism. The Quiet Death of Freedom

By John Pilger
01/05/06
"ICH" --
-- On Christmas Eve, I dropped in on Brian Haw, whose hunched, pacing figure was just visible through the freezing fog. For four and a half years, Brian has camped in Parliament Square with a graphic display of photographs that show the terror and suffering imposed on Iraqi children by British policies. The effectiveness of his action was demonstrated last April when the Blair government banned any expression of opposition within a kilometre of Parliament. The High Court subsequently ruled that, because his presence preceded the ban, Brian was an exception.
Day after day, night after night, season upon season, he remains a beacon, illuminating the great crime of Iraq and the cowardice of the House of Commons. As we talked, two women brought him a Christmas meal and mulled wine. They thanked him, shook his hand and hurried on. He had never seen them before. "That's typical of the public," he said. A man in a pin-striped suit and tie emerged from the fog, carrying a small wreath. ""I intend to place this at the Cenotaph and read out the names of the dead in Iraq," he said to Brian, who cautioned him: "You'll spend the night in cells, mate." We watched him stride off and lay his wreath. His head bowed, he appeared to be whispering. Thirty years ago, I watched dissidents do something similar outside the walls of the Kremlin.
As night had covered him, he was lucky. On 7 December, Maya Evans, a vegan chef aged 25, was convicted of breaching the new Serious Organised Crime and Police Act by reading aloud at the Cenotaph the names of 97 British soldiers killed in Iraq. So serious was her crime that it required 14 policemen in two vans to arrest her. She was fined and given a criminal record for the rest of her life.
Freedom is dying.
Eighty-year-old John Catt served with the RAF in the Second World War. Last September, he was stopped by police in Brighton for wearing an "offensive" T-shirt, which suggested that Bush and Blair be tried for war crimes. He was arrested under the Terrorism Act and handcuffed, with his arms held behind his back. The official record of the arrest says the "purpose" of searching him was "terrorism" and the "grounds for intervention" were "carrying placard and T-shirt with anti-Blair info" (sic).
He is awaiting trial.

Comfortably Numb

After my prior post of the parody of this very meaningful song I thought I should make sure the original artists get credit for their masterpiece...

by
Pink Floyd
Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?
Come on, now.
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
There’ll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up? I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

The End of the World As We Know it and I Feel Fine

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
(Lyrics source: One of Stipe's concert lyric sheets)
That’s great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -world serves its own needs, don’t misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height, down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government forhire and a combat site. Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry with the furiesbreathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tetheredcrop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common group, but it’ll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves itsown needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and thereverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, brightlight, feeling pretty psyched.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.It’s the end of the world as we know it.It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Six o’clock - TV hour. Don’t get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate.
